Biography

Edward was the son of Amyas Sanders and his wife (her first name is not known but she was the daughter of Mr Austen of Tenterden Kent according to the Visitation of Kent taken 1619-1621).[1]

Edward married Anne Pendreth at Minster, Kent on 2 November 1573 [2] (Anne was the daughter of Miles Pendreth of Northborne in Kent).

According to the Visitation, Edward and Ann had at least five children:

  • Elizabeth, who married Richard Hougham
  • Francis, who married Frances Sprackling
  • Edward
  • Jane, who married Edward Boys
  • Anne, who married Christopher Tilgham

Anne died in 1598 and on 25th June 1603 a marriage licence was issued for "Edward Saunder of Northbourne, gent., and Thomasine Lambinge, of Ewell, widow". They married on 4th July 1603 at St Peter and St Paul Temple Ewell in Kent.[3]

Edward died in October 1608 and was buried on 22 October 1608 at Minster in Kent[4].

"Edward Saunders the elder of Minster in Thanet" made his Will on 24th June 1608 [5] and probate was granted on 11th November 1608 and an inventory was taken [6]. In his Will Edward names -

  • his recently deceased brother Bartholomew Sanders
  • his wife Thomasin Sanders
  • his son Francis Sanders
  • his sons-in-law Edward and Thomas Laming, who are both under 21 - these would be the sons of his second wife Thomasine and her first husband Richard Laming
  • his son Edward Sanders, who is named the sole executor
  • his son-in-law Christopher Tilghman, who is named his overseer

Research Notes

From - The history and topographical survey of the county of Kent. volume 4; page 146:- "which Edward Sanders was brother of Bartholomew Sanders, of Minster in Thanet, who married Mary, daughter of Henry Oxenden of Wingham, Esq; whose father Amias Sanders was of Chilton in Ash, where his ancestors had resided for some generations; but were originally descended from Minster in Thanet".

From - The visitation of Kent 1619-1621 "Sandere Sciant p'sentes et futuri quod ego Willielmus Sanders de p'chia de Esh; (j)iuxta Sandwicum fil. et haeres Willi'mi Sanders de Minster dedi' etc. Johanni Bennet de Esh p'dict [--] acras et deinde Acrae Terrae meae in Esh p'dict; data 17 Septembris Anno Regni Regis Ricardi secundi decimo nono. Hijs testibus Richardo Sawlew Johannis Cordewane et alijs"

From - British History Online; Northborne parish ; https://www.british-history.ac.uk/survey-kent/vol9/pp583-604#anchorn4 Under the heading "Northborne-Court" is the following statement :- “This court-lodge, with the demesne lands of the manor, remained but a very short time in the hands of the crown, after the reconveyance of it by the archbishop, in the 3rd year of queen Elizabeth, as has been mentioned above; for it was almost immediately afterwards granted by the queen, for life, to Edward Sanders, gent, her foster brother. He afterwards resided at Norborne court, having married Anne, daughter and coheir of Francis, son of Milo Pendrath of Norborne, by Elizabeth, one of the heirs of Thomas Lewin, and nurse to queen Elizabeth. His ancestors had resided for some generations at Chilton, in Ash, but were originally descended from Minster, in Thanet." There are a number of errors in this statement;

  • "Edward Sanders, gent" married Ann Pendreth who was the daughter of MYLES Pendreth and the sister of Francis Pendreth.
  • the use of the phrase "her foster brother" in the relationship between Edward Sanders and Elizabeth I is misleading. Elizabeth Lewin, the first wife of Myles Pendreth, was a wet nurse to Elizabeth I.

Saunders-1290 and Sanders-15146 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife. previous merge request was only rejected because there was the need for preparatory work on duplicate family profiles before the merge of the two Ann/a Sa(u)nders both of whom are the wife of Edward Sa(u)nders

Saunders-1290 and Sanders-15146 do not represent the same person because: additional merges and disconnecting need to be done before these profiles can be merged

Saunders-1290 and Sanders-15146 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate profiles
There are a number of discrepancies with the profile of Edward Saunders-205 (1595-1686) :

1. Whilst Edward Saunders-1290 and Anne Pandreth-1 did have a son called Edward, he was born in 1586 and baptised on 19th June 1586 at St Mary the Virgin, Minster in Kent and NOT 1595 in South Moulton in Devon, which is over 230+ miles away from Minster in Kent. See the Visitation of Kent 1619 here https://archive.org/details/visitationofkent00camd/page/76/mode/2up?q=sanders

2. The Edward Saunders-205, son of Edward and Anne, died at Minster, Kent in July 1636 and was buried at St Mary the Virgin, Minster. (source: Kent Burials – Find my Past). I would respectfully suggest that Edward Saunders-205 be disconnected from Parents – Saunders-1290 and Pandreth-1 and Siblings – Saunders-3420 and Saunders-9629

3. The Visitation of Kent 1619 also shows that Anne Pandreth, the mother of Edward Saunders-205, is of Northborne in Kent and not of Chilton in Berkshire. I would respectfully suggest that CHILTON has been copied from the information in the Visitation but without the additional address of Chilton ‘in the parish of St Lawrence Isle of Thanet’.

4. As noted on the profile of Edward Saunders-1290, (the father of Edward Saunders-205), the Visitation of Kent 1619 records the parents of Edward Saunders-1290 as Amyas Saunders ‘of Chilton’ and ‘[blank] the daughter of Mr Austen of Tenterden’, Kent and not John Saunders-10537 of Chilton Berkshire and Anna Berkeley-851. I would therefore suggest that Edward Saunders-1290 be disconnected from Parents – Saunders-10537 and Berkeley-851

According to the Visitation of Kent taken 1619-1621, the Edward Sanders of Northbourne - who married Anne Pendreth daughter of Miles Pendreth - was the son of Amyas Sanders of Chilton KENT not Berkshire. https://archive.org/details/visitationofkent00camd/page/76/mode/2up/search/sanders.

Sanders-3579 and Sanders-1802 appear to represent the same person because: similar birthdates, same birth place, same parents. Not a lot of hard data on either, though.
