Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
John Sanders Jr was a Virginia colonist.

John was probably born about 1645 in Nansemond County, Virginia. He is the son of John Sanders and Phoebe Unknown. John died in Nansemond County, Virginia between 1704 (last date found in records) and 1712 (date his son Robert was deeded part of John's land).

Marriage & Children

John married Sarah Davis, daughter of Major Thomas Davis, about 1665 in either Nansemond or Isle of Wight County, Virginia. No marriage record has been found. His wife is identified by means of land transactions in Virginia. In the land patent granted to Richard and John Sanders on 20 August 20 1687, for 350 acres, it was stated that 300 acres were formerly granted Thomas Davis on 10 August 1644. (G.B. 8-p.10). (17thC, 447, 449) (c.P.156) Robert Roberts married Sarah's sister, Mary Davis, and "On April 20, 1694, John Sanders and Robert Roberts of Nansemond patented 7-1/2 acres in right of their wives Sarah and Mary upon eastward side of King's Creek. (G. B. 8-380)"[1]

Children of John and Sarah have been determined in part based on the will of their son Robert Sanders who died unmarried:

  • He made his will in Isle of Wight July 12, 1731, as follows: to Cousin Robert Sanders, Son of Thomas Saunders, dec., the dwelling plantation where I live north side of Queen Grave Swamp and for want of heirs to cousin Francis Saunders, son of Francis Saunders; to cousin Eliz. Saunders, dau. of Thomas Sanders decd. rem. of land, if she died, to her brother Thomas Saunders; to cousin Richard Saunders, son of Thomas Saunders, 170 acres adj. where I live, if he died without heirs to John Saunders, son to Francis Saunders; to cousin Thomas Saunders son to Thomas Saunders 208 acres, land called "Half Moon." To cousin Francis Saunders, oval table; cousin Phebe Winborn; to cousin Robert Saunders, son of Thomas Saunders, decd., all rem. est. John Winborn and Robert Saunders exres. (signed, Sanders) Pro. 27 Dec. 1731. Richard Thomas, Jno. Thomas, Lawn Wolferston. (W. & D. -431).[1] [2] [3]
  • Based on these legacies, we can deduce the sons of John Sanders II were Robert Sanders, Thomas Saunders and Francis Saunders. A daughter Phoebe Sanders married John Winborne who was one of the executors for John's estate. "Cousin Phebe Winborn" named in the will was their daughter.

Confirmed children:

  • Robert Sanders, b ca 1665 - d 1731
  • Thomas Sanders, b ca 1668 - d bef 1731
  • Phoebe Sanders, b ca 1675 - d aft 1751
  • Francis Sanders, b ca 1679 - d bef 1744

Other children attached to this profile need to be proven as actual children of John Sanders and Sarah Davis or unlinked as children.

  2. Sarah Sanders (1670-aft.1744)

Land Transactions

  • 1689 - Richard Sanders and John Sanders patented "350 acres on the Western branch in the upper Pish (Parish) of Nanzemond (Nansemond County)" on 20 October 1689 adjoining Robert Sanders. "300 acres being formerly granted to Thomas Davis Aug. 10, 1644," and 50 for transportation of 1 person. (G. B. 8-10; 17th. C. 449; C. P. 156)[4] [1]
  • "John Sanders II, who patented land on Oct. 20, 1689, as before stated, definitely seems to be the son of John Sanders I, for his children inherited the Queen Grave land. On April 20, 1694, John Sanders and Robert Roberts of Nansemond patented 7 1/2 in right of their wives Sarah and Mary upon eastward side of King's Creek. (G.B. 8-380).[1]

    • Note: one of the Jno Sanders on this list is probably John Sanders II, but which one is not certain. The identity of the other Jno Sanders is unknown.

John Sanders died between 1704 and 1712. The Will names four children of John Sanders and Sara: Francis, who had sons named Francis and John; Thomas, who had died by 1731, but who had children named Thomas, Robert, Elizabeth and Richard; a daughter who married John Winborne, with a granddaughter named Phoebe, and Robert Sanders.[1]

Sanders-5526 and Sanders-1653 do not represent the same person because: These are not the same people, see birth/death info and different wives. I do not believe John Alfred Sanders is actual son of John Sanders I.
Sanders-5526 and Sanders-1653 appear to represent the same person because: they're either duplicates, or one of them is attached to the wrong parents. Is the 1665 John perhaps the son of the other? Please research and take necessary steps. Thanks.
I am working diligently to try to source the many, varied, and, sometimes, erroneous members of this family. At present I am working on this John Sanders. He already has too many children linked to him. Don't think that John Alfred Sanders is his son. So far I can only verify four children: daughter Phoebe Sanders, sons Robert Sanders, Thomas Saunders and Francis Saunders. Any and all help with sources will be sincerely appreciated.
I detached John Alfred Sanders...
