Biography

Charles Sanders was born July 14, 1788 in Fossoway, the son of James Sanders and Ann Clink.[1]

In 1814 he married his wife Jean Robertson (1796 - 1864) in Muckhart, at the age of 26.[2] The couple made their home in Muckhart before moving to Kinross about 1825. They moved again to Beath sometime between the 1841 and 1861 census.

Children of Charles Sanders and Jean Robertson:

  1. James Sanders (1814 - 1872) m. Christian Litster
  2. Janet Sanders (1816 - 1889) m. William Wilson
  3. Jean Sanders (1818-)
  4. Peter Sanders (1819 - )
  5. Ann Sanders (1822 - )
  6. John Sanders (1824 - )
  7. Charles Saunders (1826 - 1898) m. Mary Sneddon
  8. Jean Sanders (1827 - 1903) m1. Archibald Ewen, m2. James Watson
  9. John Sanders (1829 - )
  10. Joan Sanders (1830 - 1866) m. William Cunning

In the 1841 census Charles (age 45), Mason, was in White Mire Place, Dunfermline, Fife.[3] He lived with his wife Jean and three youngest children: Charles (age 15), Jean (age 12), and Joan (age 10).

In the 1861 census Charles (age 72), Mason, was in Lassodie Village, Beath, Fife.[4][5] He lived with his wife Jean, their widowed daughter Jean (age 31), and Jean's daughter Jean Ewing (age 13).

Charles was pre-deceased by his wife in 1864.

In the 1871 census Charles (age 82), Grocer, was in Meadow Bank, Dunfermline Landward, Fife.[6]

In the 1881 census Charles (age 92), Annuitant, was the father-in-law of Christina Sanders at 18, Hill Of Beath, Beath, Fife.[7] Christina was the widow of Charles's son James.

He passed away May 4,1881 at the impressive age of 92.[8] His death record shows that his father James was also a mason. At the time of his death Charles was living in Beath with his eldest son James's family.

Research Notes

His death record does not list his mother's name, it just says that his father was James Sanders, mason, and both parents were deceased. The 1871 and 1881 census both indicate Charles was born in Fossoway about 1789. The 1788 baptism for Charles Sanders, son of James Sanders and Ann Clink, matches this information pretty closely. He also named one of his daughters Ann after his mother.
