Biography

James Sanders drowned in the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee on 9 Apr 1832, following a fire on the steamboat Brandywine. A total of 61 people drowned or burned to death as a result of the accident. James Sanders and a friend named Atterberry were returning from a trip down the Mississippi River to New Orleans on a flatboat where they sold their crops. After the sale, they bought passage aboard the steamboat for the trip back to their home in Hart County, Kentucky. But the fateful accident resulted in Sanders' death, although Atterbury survived to report the sad news to the widow Betsy (Cottrell) Sanders. [1]
