Biography

John Calvin Sanders was born in Texas 19 Jun 1867 and died in Geneva, Sabine County, Texas on 22 Apr 1947.[1][2] He is buried in Myrtle Springs Cemetery, Geneva, Texas.[3][4]

Calvin first appears on a census in San Augustine County, Texas as Calvin Franklin, age 4, born in Texas, in the household of Willis Richard Franklin and wife Mary (Thompson) Franklin.[5] He is still living with Willis and Mary in 1880, but is listed as their adopted son and bears the name Calvin Sanders, age 14, born in Texas.[6]

He was first married in San Augustine County, Texas on 25 Sep 1887 to Josephine Voshary.[7][8] It appears they had no children and she passed away by 1900 as he is listed as widowed in that year's census.[9]

Calvin then married Mattie Oliver on 13 Oct 1910 in Sabine County, Texas.[10][11] After his death, Mattie remarried to J. A. Bennefield on 13 Nov 1955 in San Augustine County, Texas.[12] Mattie was born 05 Aug 1884 in Texas to George Oliver and Mary Jones, and died 11 Jan 1976 at Center, Shelby County, Texas.[13][14]

Calvin and Mattie had the following known children:

  1. Infant Sanders has a tombstone in Myrtle Springs Cemetery with no dates, but based on marriage date of Calvin and Mattie and births of other children it is believed this child was likely their first and died in infancy.[15]
  2. I. V. Sanders was born in Texas[16] on 20 Dec 1917, died 18 Jan 1927 and is buried in Myrtle Springs Cemetery in the plot with his parents.[17]
  3. James Laurie "Jack"[18] Sanders was born in Texas[16] 18 Feb 1919, died 07 Apr 1988 and is buried in Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas.[19]
  4. Edell Coneal[20] Sanders was born in Texas[18] 17 Aug 1921, died 07 Mar 2008 and is buried in Myrtle Springs Cemetery, Geneva, Texas.[21][22] She was first married to an Easley[4] and was later married to James Harvey Odom.[20][22]

I am trying to determine what, if any, kinship there was between John Calvin Sanders and Willis Richard Franklin who Calvin is living with for the 1870 & 1880 census’ of San Augustine County. We have therefore been running forward lineage from Calvin in hopes of locating any living descendants who might do a Family Finder autosomal DNA test to compare to the Franklins to determine if a kinship existed as Willis had a sister that I have not been able to locate, who may have been married to a Sanders and had children that were taken in by family if the parents had passed away for example. I did a check to see if any sisters of Willis’ wife Mary (Thompson) Franklin, daughter of Stephen and Mary A. Thompson, may have married Sanders, but the only one I found was for her youngest sister Sarah, but the marriage was in 1871, many years after Calvin’s birth. For additional information or questions regarding this research or DNA testing, please feel free to contact me.
