Biography

"In the name of God Amen. I Robert Sanford of the County of Westmoreland, of the Parish of Cople, being very sick, and weak of body. But of sound and perfect mind, and memory, thanks be to almighty God, for the same, do make this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form following, by revoking, and making null and void, all former Wills and Testaments by me.
IMPREMIS: I committ my Soul into the hands of my Blessed Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ, hoping throug his merits, to obtain Everlasting life, and Salvation and my body to the earth, from whince it was taken for decently buried, according to the discretion of the executors of my Will hereafter named.
ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my son Robert Sanford, the plantation where on he now lives, and half the land thereunto (? Co.) belonging to him to hold to him by said son Robert Sanford, and his heirs forever.
ITEM: I give and bequesth unto my son John Sanford, this plantation whereon I now live, and the other half of said tract of land, to him, my said son John, and his heirf forever.
ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Sanford, the land I purchased of William Moxley, being called my ole plantation, to hold to him, my said son Joseph, and his heirs forever.
ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my son Robert Sanford, my negro man, named Harry, to him and his heirs forever. ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Sanford, my negro man named Tom, to him the said Joseph, and his heirs forever,
ITEM: I give and bequeath to my son John Sanford, my negro man named, Will, to him the said John, and his heirs forever.
ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Margaret Neale, my negro man named, Peter, to her the said Margaret, and her heirs forever.
ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Jemimah Minor, my negro girl named Winney, to her, the said Jemimah, and her heirs forever.
ITEM: I give and bequeath, unto my grandson Joshua Sanford, my negro girl, named Nancy, to him and his heirs forever, and it is my will, and desire, are said negro girl Nancy, be delivered to my said grandson Joshua, at the age of twenty one years, not before.
ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my son Robert Sanford, all my crop of tobacco, provided my said son Robert, to pay all my debts, which I owe at my death.
ITEM: It is my will that slaves my negroes that they have an equall share of the crop of corn.
ITEM: It is my will and desire, that all the rest of my personal estate herein not given, be equally divided among my children, namely, Robert, Joseph, John, and my daughters, Annie (Anne), Elizabeth, Margaret, and Jemimah, share and share alike. And I do constitute and appoint my son Robert Sanford, and Presly Neale, who is and sole Exortrix and Executors, of this my last Will ane Testament. In witness whereof, I have set my hand, and affixed my seal, on this Third day of June One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Six.

Westmoreland, At a Court held for said County 26th day of April 1737.

This last Will and Testament of Robert Sanford, decease, was presented at February Court, last and therein codicil, for the oath of Mary Harvey, and of this witness thereto (her not being at Court), and for that Presley Neale, the other witness, to this Will Subscriber being nominated, and named executor therein named, As also (?), thereby and was at this court, Robert Sanford, son of the deceased, and executor in the said will named, signifying to the Court that this Mary Harvey, was dead, led this said executor was admitted to make oath to this said Will, that being first proved by the oath of Presley Neale, and of this witness, thereto who alslo (?) to the said Mary Harvey, the other witness, subscribed, name to this said Will, therefore the said is admitted to record, and upon the motion of the said executors, and his performing what is usual in such cases a certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in dure form. Test.
