Muriel Almyra Sands Peterson 1915 - 2014

A private family service will be held at a later date for Muriel Almyra Sands Peterson of Eugene who died January 31st, 2014, just 21 days short of her 99th birthday. She was born on February 21st, 1915 in Alvarado, Minnesota to Carl and Julia Sands.

As the oldest of 10 children in a family of beet farmers with very little money, Muriel eloped with her sweetheart, Lloyd Fredolph Peterson on June 5th, 1933. They were married in Avarado, Minnesota and the cost of their ceremony was $1.50 for the minister and $7.50 for her ring. Their honeymoon was spent working in the sugar beet fields.

Muriel and Lloyd left Minnesota in October of 1936 in a 1929 Model A sport coupe with their 7 month old daughter, Marlene and their 2 year old daughter, JoAnn heading for Oregon and a better life.

No stranger to hard work, after settling here in the Willamette Valley, Muriel was employed in various occupations including working as a piler with her husband, working as a grease monkey for the railroad and also as a trailer monkey steering the back axle of the log truck for her husband so she could put herself through college.

In 1955, at the age of 40, Muriel was accepted in the Dental School at OHSU and became a dental hygienist.

In 1965, while working in Cottage Grove for Dr. Dean Webb as a hygienist, she was approached to teach the Dental Hygiene program at Lane Community College where she taught until she retired in 1976. During that time, it was one of her greatest honors to have been selected by her students as "One of the Ten Most Outstanding Teachers" in 1975.

Although she was preceded in death by her daughters Marlene Peterson and JoAnn C. Sugg, two husbands, Lloyd Fredolph Peterson and Steve Chambers, 8 brothers and Sisters and one Grandson, Neil Patrick Sugg, she leaves behind one sister, Sonja Marie Sands of Springfield, three grandchildren, Michael A. Sugg of Beaverton, Tally L. Townsend of Junction City, Steven L. Sugg of Dayton, 8 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren and many friends.

She will be dearly missed!
