Biography

His parents are Martin A. and Annette (Anderson) Sandstrom[1]

Clarence registered for the World War I draft on 24 Aug 1918 in New Britain, Connecticut, United States. He lists his father as his next of kin, and he's described as having blue eyes and brown hair.[2]

On 18 Mar 1920, Clarence applied for a passport. He indicates that he is a student, and that he is planning on traveling to Hong Kong for "commercial business" via Japan and China aboard the Empress of Asia on 6 May 1920.[3]

Martin took several trips to China over the course of his life:

1923 In 1923, Clarence traveled to Shanghai, China returning to Seattle, Washington aboard the S.S. President Grant on 27 Jul 1923.[4]
1934 He and his second wife, Stella Louise (b. 12 Aug 1904 in Milan, Indiana), returned to Los Angeles from Hong Kong, China on 30 Sep aboard the S.S. President Coolidge.[5]
1939 Clarence and Stella travel to Hong Kong again this year. In the Residence column, it indicates that they are traveling "c/o Standard Oil of Los Angeles, California." Also on this entry is a notation that their passports were "lifted" in San Francisco. Does this mean they were stolen, or does "lifted" have a different meaning here?[6]
1947 He and his family -- Stella Louise and their a son, James Edwin (b. 19 Dec 1939 in Chicago, Illinois) -- traveled to Singapore in 1947, returning to New York City aboard the S.S. President Monroe on 28 Sep 1947.[7]
1949 Clarence, Stella and James once again travel to Hong Kong returning on 21 Nov 1949 aboard the S. S. President Wilson.[8]

He lived in Los Angeles, California when he died in 1966.[9]
