Biography

Samuel, son of Edwyni, was baptised on 2 July 1615 in Ombersley, Worcestershire, England.[1][2]

In 1628/9 Samuel was a beneficiary in the will of his paternal grandmother Mercy Sandys. [3]

He married on 12 July 1636, Mary, daughter and heir of Hugh Barker, DCL, of Chichester, Sussex. [4] They had two sons and a daughter.

In April 1640, Sandys was elected Member of Parliament for Droitwich in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected in November 1640 for the Long Parliament. As a supporter of the King he was disabled from sitting in August 1642. [5]

He was made governor of Evesham in 1642 and commanded a troop of horse at the action at Wickfield and at the Battle of Edgehill. Later he raised an infantry regiment and cavalry regiment for the king at his own expense. He was lieutenant-governor of Worcester under Prince Maurice in 1644.[5]

As a result his estates were sequestered, and, in 1651, he was imprisoned for a time. He was an active royalist plotter.[5]

In 1660 Sandys was re-elected as MP for Droitwich in the Convention Parliament. In 1661 he was elected MP for Worcestershire in the Cavalier Parliament and sat until 1681. He was re-elected MP for Droitwich in 1681 and held the seat until 1685[5]

He married secondly Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Pakington†, 1st Bt., of Westwood Park, Worcestershire, widow of Henry Washington of Packington, Leicestershire.[4]

Samuel died in 1685 and was buried on 17 April 1685 in Ombersley, Worcestershire, England.[6]

Sir Samuel's epitaph, St. John the Baptist Church Wickhamford Church, Worcestershire

For prudence, valour, and a generous mind,

Though equalled, not excelled among mankind.

He was the clergy’s friend, the poor’s relief,

Our heart’s joy once, but now his death’s our grief.

Here now he lies, in hopes to rise again,

When Doomsday trumpet sounds, with Christ to reign.
