Biography

Miles Sandys was the 5th son of William Sandys of Hawkshead, Lancs. and of London and Margaret, daughter of John Dixon of London. [1] He was named in his father's will.[2]

He matriculated into St. John’s, Cambridge in 1544 and attended the Middle Temple by 1551.

He married by 1562, Hester, daughter of William Clifton of Barrington, Somerset and was named in his father in law's will in that same year.[3]

Miles had at least nine children. At least four of them were baptised at Fladbury in Worcestershire:

  • Edwin (1563)
  • William (1565)
  • Miles (1566)
  • Miles (1568)

Hester, born in 1569 was baptised at Chesham, Buckinghamshire.

Other children Bridget, Elizabeth, George and Henry have not yet had their place of baptism identified.

In 1573 Miles hosted Queen Elizabeth I on one of her many progresses around the country. [4]This would have involved a great deal of expense on the part of the Sandys family, but was a mark of their position in society and Miles' role as a clerk of the Crown on the Queen's Bench. She stayed again at Latimer in 1576.

In 1581 he was named in the will of his mother in law Elizabeth Clifton. [5]

After the death of his wife Hester he married Mary Colt, the widow of Alderman Woodcock of London. [6] Their marriage took place at St Mary Aldermanbury, London on 25 Feb 1586.

He made his own will on 6 Nov 1600, describing himself as Miles Sandys of Isenhampstead Latimers, Buckinghamshire. [7] He made bequests to:

Miles died 22 Oct 1601. He had requested burial in the church at Latimer beside his late loving wife Hester. His will was probated on 23 Oct 1601.

He lived and died at Latimer but it is most unlikely he was born there.

Sandys-223 and Sandys-5 appear to represent the same person because: Dup Miles or Myles Sandys. HOP says Miles.
