The wife of Dr John Emerson, an owner of Dred Scott. She, his widow, is the "Emerson" in Scott vs Emerson proceedings which later turned into the Supreme Court Scott vs Sanford (her brother) known as the abominable and historically embarrassing "Dred Scott decision".
Dred Scott originally tried to purchase his and his family's freedom from her, but she refused. The legal battles ensued from there.
Mrs. Chaffee did grant Dred Scott his freedom and at the time she was married to Calvin Chaffee, an Anti-Slavery senator from Massachusetts. I wonder how that affected her decision to finally release Dred Scott?
Calvin Chaffee and Irene are both buried in Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.
