Some sources indicate Mary is actually "Nary" a male child of Joel and Louisa and that he "went to Mexico" and/or served in the Mexican War.
Note: Some sources indicate this child is female and given name is Mary. Information from Gladys Sanford Weaver indicates name is Nary Sanford. DOB may be 15 July 1824 per Robert Jackson Sr. from information given by Bruce Sanford of Independence, KS. The family tradition that "Nary/Mary" married a Mexican soldier and was never heard from again may indicate that the couple moved to Mexico, New York - which is near the location in Cayuga County where Philetus Timothyk Sanford resided.
