Biography

Vernon was born 4 Apr 1810 in Middletown, Delaware County, New York. He was the son of Cyrenus Sanford and Ann Hubbell[1][2] His biography in the Whiteside County history includes his portrait.

He married Catherine Campbell 7 Sep 1834 in Delaware County, New York.[2][3][4] They moved from Middletown, Delaware County, New York to Polo, Ogle County, Illinois in 1836.[2][4][5]

In 1840 he was living in Whiteside County, Illinois.[6] His household included 1 male age 20-29 (Vernon), 2 females under age 5 (Mary Jane, Nancy), and 1 female age 20-29 (Catherine).

On 1 May 1843 he purchased 148 acres in the northwest corner of section 6, township 22N, range 8E.[7] On 1 Jan 1849 he purchased 40 acres in the southeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section 36, township 23N, range 7E.[8]

In 1848 the village of Sanfordville, named for Vernon Sanford, was laid out.[2]

In 1850 in the 37th district of Whiteside County, Illinois, Vernon was a farmer with real estate valued at $2000. His household included Vernon age 39 born in New York, Katherine age 34 born in New York, Mary J age 13 born in Illinois, Nancy age 11 born in Illinois, and Henry W age 19 born in Illinois. His name was recorded as Sandford. The family of Joel Sanford was next door.[9] In 1855 in Jordan, Whiteside, Illinois there were 11 members in his family.[10] In 1860 in Jordan, Whiteside, Illinois his household included Vernon age 49 and Catherine age 44, both born in New York.[11]

In June 1866 he was assessed tax on income and one carriage in the town of Jordan, Polo Post Office, Illinois.[12] In 1870 in Jordan, Whiteside, Illinois he was a farmer with real estate valued at $13000 and personal estate valued at $3550. His household included Vernon age 60 and Catherine age 55.[13] In 1880 in Jordan, Whiteside, Illinois he was a retired farmer. His family included Vernon Sanford age 70, his wife Catherine Sanford age 64, and his grandson Frank D Wolcott age 23 born in Illinois. Vernon's father was born in New York and his mother was born in Connecticut.[14]

On 1893 land ownership maps Vernon Sanford is located southwest of Polo on NW corner of lot 30 Buffalo township, Ogle County, Illinois.[15] and in the NE corner of lot 1 Jordan township, Whiteside County, Illinois adjacent to the town of Sanfordville.[16]

He died at his home in Sanfordville 8 Sept 1899, aged 89 years.[4] He is buried in the Reed Cemetery, Polo, Ogle County, Illinois.[17]

He wrote his will on 24 June 1884 in Polo, Ogle County, Illinois naming wife Catherine; grandson Irvin Finkle, the son of his daughter Mary Finkle; grandson Frank Wolcott, the son of his daughter Mary J Wolcott, deceased; and grandchildren Arthur Finkle, Vernon Finkle, Katy Finkle, identifying land in section 1 and in blocks 1 and 2 of the village of Sanfordville. He named as executors wife Catherine Sanford and her brother John D Campbell of Polo, Illinois. In a codicil on 8 May 1888 he named daughter Nancy Finkle and grandson David Finkle, son of said Nancy Finkle. His will was proved in court 8 December 1889.[18]

Research Notes

His biography[2] states that his parents were married in Connecticut. This is likely incorrect, as other historical biographies state that Cyrenus was born in Connecticut but that his wife Anner was born in New York and that they were married in New York.
