Margaret (Sanford) Neale was a Virginia colonist.

Margaret Sanford, daughter of Robert Sanford and Mary Sanford, was born about 1706 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Margaret is named as Margaret Neale in the will of her father, Robert Sanford, dated 3 June 1736. Robert named his son Robert Sanford and son-in-law Presley Neale as executors.[1]

Margaret is also named as heiress and co-executor with son Daniel Neale and brother-in-law Christopher Neale in will of husband Presley Neale, dated 27 April 1749.[1]

Marriage

Presley Neale married Margaret Sanford about 1733 in Westmoreland County. Margaret's last name at birth is given in some sources as Sanford[1] and in others as Fauntleroy.[2]. Headley, in Married Well and Often, gives her name as Margaret Sanford, daughter of Robert Sanford.[3] Marriage record and the will of her father, Robert Sanford, establish her last name at birth was Sanford. Their known children include:

  1. Daniel Neale, 1735-1804, md. Jemima Kitchen, dau of William and Margaret (Ward) Kitchen
  2. Elizabeth Neale, 1737- bef 1765, md John Spence
  3. Ann Shapleigh Neale, 1739- bef 1776, md Henry Wisheart

  5. Richard Neale, 1743-1816, md 1st) Frances Underwood; 2nd) Mary (Nelson) Smith wid of Lewis Smith

Death & Legacy

Margaret Neal's will was written 11 October 1753 in Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia and entered for probate on 27 May 1755.[1]

In the name of God Amen I Margaret Neal of the County of Westmoreland & Parish of Cople being very sick weak in body but perfect mind and memory thanks to God Almighty for the same do make this my last will and Testament in manner and form following hereby revoking and making void all former wills and testaments by me made.

IMPRIMIS I commit my soul into the hands of my blessed saviour and redemer Jesus Crist hoping thro his merits to obtain everlasting life and salvation and my body to the earth from whence it came to be decently buried according to the discretion of my executor of my will hereafter named.

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my loving son SHAPLEIGH NEALE one negro fellow name ISAAC the said negro I purchased of Mr. WILLIAM BLACK, to him my said son SHAPLEIGH NEALE and his heirs forever.

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my loving daughter JEMIMA NEALE one mulatto girl named JEAN HONEST to her my said daughter Jemima Neale and her heirs forever.

ITEM I give to my daughter ELIZABETH SPENCE my old ring to my said daughter Elizabeth forever.

ITEM I do constitute and appoint my loving son DANIEL NEAL and JOHN SPENCE JUN. to be executors of this my last will and testament. In Testimony that this is my last will and testament I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seale this eleventh day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty three.
