He was a veteran of the Civil War, Spanish American War, and Phillipine Insurrection. He served continuously from the time of his enlistment until his death.

General Sanno was born at New Hampton, New Jersey, December 10, 1840. He was appointed to West Point from New Jersey in 1859 and graduated from that academy in 1863.
