Richard F. Sapp was a private in Company D, 12th Alabama Cavalry Regt. He enlisted at Hogoods Cross Roads, Jdfferson County in 1863 and served until he was paroled at the close of the war.
It was after the Battle of Chickamauga and their group of soldiers were penned in by the Tennessee River on one side and Yankees on the other. During the course of the battle they had lost their horses.
They hid that night and the next morning at daybreak they knew their only way out was to swim the river, so they started for it. Asa Griffith could not swim, so Richard Sapp swam the Tennessee River with Asa on his back. After returning home from the war, Richard married Asa's sister, Emily Griffith.
This story told by Porter Sapp, 1982. Taken from "Early Families of Blount County" (Alabama) by Carolina Nigg.
