Biography

Sarah (maiden name unconfirmed) married Matthew Jouett, II, circa 1758, in Louisa or Hanover county, Virginia. Matthew Jouett wrote his will 9 September 1779, and it was proved during the September session of the Caswell County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions (which ran for the three-month period September-November). Sarah married, secondly, John Edmonds Brown.

  • The Heritage of Caswell County, North Carolina, Jeannine D. Whitlow, Editor (1985) at 326 (Article #406 "Matthew Jouett II" by Elizabeth Anthony Faller) states that after 1782 the widow Sarah Jouett married her second husband, John Brown. It is believed that person was John Edmunds Brown, who died circa 1798, in Caswell county, North Carolina. John's Will listed wife, Sarah, daughter, Nancy Harper, Elizabeth Swift, Sally Brown, sons Bedford, Jethro, Robert, John, William and Green. He then separately mentioned his four youngest, Sally , Johnny, Billy and Green (probably indicating they were by his second (or third) wife). Additional information and sources are given here: https://caswellcountync.org/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I8589&tree=tree1

According to her Find A Grave memorial, Sarah and Matthew Jouitt were the parents of eight children:

  • Nancy Joett, born 1760, died October 9, 1844, in Sumner county, Tennessee, [1] married Jeptha Rice, a son of Hezekiah Rice and Mary Bullock Note: This person has a WikiTree profile here (with different parents) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jouett-87
  • Susannah D. Jouett, born circa 1763, died after 1830, married Armistead Rogers, a son of Peter Rogers and Elizabeth Preston, on June 11, 1781, in Caswell county, North Carolina [1]
  • Mary "Polly" Jouett, born between 1771 and 1774, died September 8, 1849, in Davidson county, Tennessee, married Roger Dixon, a son of LTC Henry "Hall" Dixon and Martha Frances Wynn, on December 16, 1794, in Caswell county, North Carolina
  • Matthew Jouett, III, born circa 1773, died July 13, 1830, in Overton, Tennessee, married Martha "Patsey" Fleming, born February 26, 1779, in Virginia, on October 29, 1794, in Surry county, North Carolina
  • George Washington Jouett, born between 1772 and 1777, died January 26, 1796, in Caswell county, North Carolina, unmarried [2]
  • Thomas Jouett, born 1774, died in 1837, in Johnson county, Arkansas, [3] married 1) Hannah Waddy Tate, daughter of John Tate and wife, Sally, on January 26, 1801 and 2) Martha (Fleming) Jouett [possibly the widow of his elder brother, Matthew? Research necessary] [4] https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fleming-226
  • John Clark Rogers Jouett, born circa 1777/79 married Patsey Samuel, on March 9, 1810, in Casswell county, North Carolina
  • Elizabeth "Betsey" Jouett

After her first husband's death, Sarah filed a claim for a Revolutionary War pension, based on Matthew's service. A payment voucher was issued in 1782 in the name of Sarah Jouett, with the name of her second husband, John Edmunds Brown, written on the reverse. Sarah Jouett-Brown filed in Caswell Co. Court on 22 Nov 1798 (Book C, page 363) to receive her dower rights from her deceased second husband's estate. John Brown's Will was dated 7 Jun 1798 (Book C, page 353). Sarah Jouett-Brown died soon after 1800. There were no known children born to Sarah and John Brown.

Researchers Notes

Sarah was born circa 1737, probably in Virginia. About 1762, Sarah married Matthew Jouett, II, born circa 1735, in New Kent county, Virginia. Eight children of Sarah and Matthew found at this website: https://caswellcountync.org/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I15591&tree=tree1

Sarah may have been the sister of Anne Bedford, who was the first wife of John Edmunds Brown.
