The christening records of at least their first four children list John's occupation as Master of the Poorhouse/Workhouse, and they resided at the Workhouse. (The records of the younger two do not include father's occupation or place of residence in the transcription, and the images are not available.)
From workhouses.org.uk: "In 1834, it was reported that Stanhope had a workhouse where an average of twenty inmates of both sexes were accommodated. The establishment was run by a contractor." In 1837 the Weardale Poor Law Union was formed, made up of four parishes/townships including Stanhope.[2] Presumably this is why John no longer had that occupation by the time of the 1841 census.
In 1841 Sarah Waggott (age 40-44) lived in Stanhope with her husband John (50-54, Quarryman) and five children: Jane (14), Elizabeth (12), John (10), Mary (4), and Thomas (2).[3]
In 1851 Sarah Waggott (age 51) lived in Stanhope with her husband John (62, Labourer), son John (19, Labourer), and grandson John (3).[4]
In 1861 Sarah Waggott (age 61) lived in Stanhope with her husband John (72, Labourer), son John (29, Labourer), and grandson Jonny (13, Labourer).[5]
Sarah Waggot passed away in 1863, aged 63 years - her death was registered in Weardale, Durham [the RD for Stanhope] in the second quarter of the year.[6] Sarah Waggott of Stanhope, aged 63 years, was buried at St Thomas the Apostle in Stanhope on 3 Apr 1863.[7]
