Research

Philip Sargent first appears in the LaFourche Parish Land Records 10/19/1829, Slave Purchase/sale as follows: Grantor , Phillip Sargent; Grantee, Leufroy Barras. There is also a John Sargent, who may be his brother, and who married Mary McBride in 1830. "Sargent & Chandler" also appear in the records beginning in 1821. On 6/21/1831, Conveyance #1831, Lafourche Parish, Grantor, John Grisham to Grantee, Philip Sargent; On 9/15/1831, Philip Sargent and John Sargent appear as purchasers from John Wilgus. March of 1838, Grantor James Murray to Grantee, Mary Sargent (is this John's wife?); John appears in records 4/4/1838 Philip Sargent continues to appear in the record in LaFourche Parish until 1852. "No. 760 3/384 On January 20, 1829, Philippe M. Sargent, of this Parish, for the consideration or in consideration, herein after specified, he has abandoned, transferred, made over and delivered, by these presents to Daniel Greenleaf, late of Port Gibson, Mississippi, one tract of land situated in this Parish to wit; five argents on the right side of Bayou Terrebonne, with a depth of ten argents, and thirty argents of depth on the left side, sounded above on the right side by Leufroy Barras, and on the left by Suguste Babin, bounded below on the right side by Habanike Arman and on the left side by land the widow Henry S. Witnessed by Joseph Delaporte and H. C. Thibodaux". Also, No. 761 M./115 On January 28, 1829 Henry C. Thibodaux, with "Bill of Sale", dated October 1, 1825, for a tea t of land of 10 arpents on Bayou L'eau Bleue to Joseph Delaporte and P.M. Sargent." From Terrebonne parish GenWeb, Conveyance Records Book E. See below new source which states Philippe Sargeant died in 1836. Therefore, some previous info listed under "Phillip Sargent" may be incorrect. Some sources show that Phillip M. Sargent and Margaret Hicklin married January 13, 1822 in Ralls, Missouri. (Missour Marriages before 1840, Compiled by Susan Ormesher, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Baltimore, MD)

  • "No. 2090 pg. 411 M. 2/383. On April 3, 1837 ....containing about two and two-thirds argents front, bounded above by land formerly owned by Edouard SAVOW, and now in the possession of the succession of Philippe M. Sargent and below by land of Jean Baptiste RICHARD, ... (Terrebonne Parish Conveyance Records, a slave sale)

NOTES

  • Some sources spell his name Phillip Sargent but the ones from Terrebonne Parish Conveyance Records and some others spell it Philippe Sergeant, which I think might be the proper one. I have been researching Sargent from England when in fact, he might have French or French Canadian heritage.
  • Researched "Asahel Gross" who is mentioned in an above noted slave sale with Philippe Sargent and found name mentioned in book about Farmington Maine on "Mr. Asahel Gross also conceived the idea of distilling whiskey for home consumption."; Also, #135, Pg. 67 "On June 10, 1823 Asahel GROS gave power of attorney to Elnathan POPE, of the town of Farmington, County of Kennebec, in State of Maine, to tend to his estate, right, title, claim, interest or demand whatsoever, of and unto any of the said premises in State of Maine. Witnessed by Aaron Hains and Louis Darbois." At some point, he may have been involved in ownership of Acadia Plantation. In 1825 he bought land in Terrebonne, eight aprons front on both sides of Bayou Terrebonne, from Henry S. Thibodaux. No. 248 Pg. 257, Terrebonne Conveyance Records, Acts #201-400. He was part or full owner of a slave ship, the Merino, which was seized in Pensacola Fla - see your case on this. Wonder if Philippe Sargent was involved in Slave trade also. Hope not.

In her application to the Children of the D.A.R., by Kathleen Van Hoose Snow, it is noted: "Sargeant Anc. James 1717 MD, d......1759; Jeremiah VA, Mara PA, Snowden MD, Stephen NC, WM MD & VA

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Philip by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Philip:

Have you ever looked into whether this guy could have been related to Beausergeants? Here's another conveyance from Terrebonne that I've noticed going through them:

No. 16 Pg. 29 On June 17, 1822 Discharge Jean Baptiste BEAUSERGEANT alias LANGEVIN and wife to Bernard E. HAINS. Jean Baptiste BEAUSERGEANT husband of Marguerite BERGERON widow of Pierre GUIDRY. Discharge Bernard Edouard HAINS as husband of Leonore Melanie GUIDRY (deceased) daughter of Pierre GUIDRY and Marguerite BERGERON. Witnessed by Hubert BELLENGER, and Ase DUGAS.

I'm researching these people, happened upon this profile and thought it might be worth checking out if you're not sure on who this person is. :-)
