Herbert Livingston Satterlee (1863–1947) was an American lawyer, author, and businessman. From 1908 to 1909, he served as the United States Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He is a direct descendant of Robert Livingston, the first Lord of colonial America's Livingston Manor, through his paternal grandmother, Mary LeRoy Livingston.^[1]

Herbert Livingston Satterlee was born on 31 Oct 1863 in New York, New York, son of George Bowen Satterlee (1833 - 1903) and Sarah Brady (Wilcox) Satterlee (1836 - ). His siblings were:

He served in the Coast Signal Service, Auxiliary Naval Force during the Spanish American War. ^[2]

Herbert married Louisa Pierpont Morgan (1866 - 1946) on 15 Nov 1900, daughter of J. P. Morgan.^[3].Thier children were:

• Eleanor Morgan Satterlee 1905–1951

In 1910, Satterlee and his wife Louise Pierpont Morgan Satterlee purchased historic Sotterley Plantation in Hollywood, Maryland. It was restored and opened to the public after Herbert died, and was designated as a National Historic Landmark. ^[4]

In the 1930 census Herbert (age 66), Lawyer, was the married head of household in East 36 Street., Manhattan, New York, New York, United States.^[6]

Herbert died of a self-inflicted gun wound on 14 Jul 1947 aged 83.^[7]
