The attached photo of the tokens used at Joseph Mitchell Satterwhite's store in Lovelady, Texas were legally used by agreement between the store owner and the owner of the saw mill. Joseph Mitchell Satterwhite bought the tokens from the manufacturer for a fraction of the face value. The saw mill owner paid Joseph Mitchell Satterwhite, face value minus a discount. The saw mill owner paid his workers with the tokens. The workers spent the tokens at Joseph Mitchell Satterwhite's store. The store owner and the saw mill owner liked the system, the workers possibly did not. Coal miners in KY, PA and Ohio were paid in that way and labor unions fought against the system.
