Biography

Ruby Satterwhite Gattis, 90, of Waycross, died early Sunday morning, January 31, 2016, at Baptist Village.

A native of Greenville, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Clifton Raleigh Satterwhite and Ellen Viola Stewart. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas Clayton Gattis; her sister, Mary Salter Griesbauer; her brother, Jordan Devon Satterwhite; and a grandson, Robert Lessley Tyre, Jr.

She attended schools in Butler County, Alabama, and married her husband Tom Gattis on February 1, 1942 in Columbus, Georgia.

After Tom's military service, Tom and Ruby moved to Waycross where Tom worked for Kress, and then moved to Albany, Georgia where Tom worked for Churchwell's Department Store. Then in 1954 the Gattis family returned to Waycross where Tom accepted the position of manager of Calhoun's Department Store. Ruby enjoyed her role as a dedicated wife and mother and was an accomplished seamstress and excellent cook.

When Tom served on the Waycross City Commission and was Mayor of Waycross in 1964, she was by his side.

Until her health prevented attendance, Ruby was an active member of Central Baptist church for over 60 years. All four of their children were baptized there. Tom and Ruby were the leaders of the Junior Youth Department for over 20 years.

From 1978 until 1996, Ruby owned and operated R&R Fabrics on Plant Avenue in Waycross.

Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Gattis Thomas and Linda Gattis Davis (Bill); two sons, Thomas Larry Gattis and Robert Clifton Gattis (Frances) all of Waycross; three grandsons, Ronald Banks Thomas, Jr. (Regina) of Lawrenceville, Clayton Matthew Thomas (Brooke) of Waycross, and Thomas Clayton Gattis II (Lauren) of Houston, Texas; six great grandchildren, Zach Thomas and Jake Thomas of Lawrenceville, Banner Thomas and Neeley Thomas of Waycross, Harper Lane Gattis of Houston, Texas, and Cannon Dyer and Baylyn Dyer of Lawrenceville.
