Story about Louis Adam Sauer: Via handwritten notes by daughter Ella Catherine Sauer Pendery in the
family bible. I.E. Louis was put into St. Aloysius Orphanage, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1866 by ??? When his parents died in Marietta, Ohio. He was a few months shy of four years old. and his sister
was older than he was. When he was 8 years old, he was adopted by a farmer in Alexandria, Ky. It seems that the farmer wanted Louis as a "farm hand" and mistreated him. Louis ran away when he
was 12 years old and hid in the hay field of a neighboring farmer )my grandfather) John Adam Stegman. One of
my uncles (Nick) was sent to the pasture to bring the cows into the barn for the night. He found Louis hiding and crying and took him into the house where Louis told the Stegman family that he was
mistreated and that he would run away again if he was sent back. It was decided that the Stegman family would give him a home. He grew up with Nick and his other siblings. When he was 18 years
old, Louis told the Stegmans, he wanted to go to Pittsburgh and find his sister and brother. He did find her and she had married a Mr. Barth. He worked a few years in Pittsburgh and got homesick
for Kentucky and the Stegman family. He returned and in a year he married Mary Catherine Stegman in August 1884. They lived in Alexandria and Newport Kentucky and then bought a home in Bellevue
and raised their family. Louis died in the family home in April 1936 .
From Joan Klare:
Mother told me that Grampa (Louis Sauer) owned houses (which he rented for
income) and the houses were next door to Uncle Joe in Dayton. as well as
brother
John. It was my understanding that they lost their homes due to the
depression and couldn't make house payments. That could account for the
changes in address and later renting in Cold Spring, as that is where John
eventually raised all his family. And Uncle Joe stayed in Dayton and that is
where the two daughters left for the convent in Melbourne. Also their other
children were married in St. Bernard Church in Dayton, which confirms that they stayed in Dayton, until their marriages
took them elsewhere, usually Newport, Cold Spring and Wilder, Ky. My
grandfather Louis Sauer also lost his property in Dayton due to the
depression and his tenants could not pay the rent, thus he could not pay the
mortgage and lost them. He was an electrician by trade. He managed to keep
his house on Foote Avenue in Bellevue, Ky.
