Rebecca was born in Ryde on the Isle of Wight probably around 1802 to parents Thomas and Mary Saunders[1] although her birth date from various census is suggested a birth date from 1805-1811. Her father Thomas was an Isle of Wight pilot who died in 1818 while smuggling goods from France.
Like several of her sisters, Rebecca presumably went into service, probably working in London where she would have met her future Husband William Thomas Sansum. Rebecca and William married on 1 February 1829 in Saint Giles in the Fields, Camden, England.[2]. Rebecca had been born in Ryde on the Isle of Wight and was probably working as a domestic servant in London at the time.
By 1832 William (a joiner) and Rebecca had two children Henry William born about 1830 and Frederick. Both boys were baptised on the same day, on the 30th December 1832, at which time the couple were recorded as living in Perry’s Place, just off Oxford Street.
By 1851 Rebecca and William were living apart. At the census, Rebecca (married, age 43 born in Newhaven, Isle of Wight) was a house servant of Edward Turner in Bishop Stoke, Hampshire, England.[3] In the 1861 census Rebecca and William were still living apart. Rebecca (age 50) was the companion of George Frankland in West Ham, Essex, England. She was probably caring for George’s five unmarried daughters.. [4]
In the 1871 census Rebecca (age 66) was living with her husband and her son Henry and family in Deptford, London, England.[5]
