Biography

Birth and Baptism

Samuel Saunders was baptised in Hersmonceaux, Sussex 3 December 1811. His parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Saunders[1]

Marriage and Children

Samuel married Elizabeth Pankhurst in Hellingly Sussex on 23 December 1837. Samuel's father was Thomas Saunders, Elizabeth's father was John Clement[2]

In 1841 Samuel, aged 30 and Elizabeth Saunders, aged 25 were living in Cowbeach, Herstmonceux, Sussex with their children William (5), Naomi (3) and Margrett (1). Also in the household were Jesse and Louisa Catt both aged 20[3]

In 1851 Samuel (39) and Ellizabeth (35) were living in Warbleton with their children Naomi (12), Margaret (11), Thomas (9), John (6), Azura (3), James (1)[4]

In 1871 Samuel, a widower aged 59, was lodging in Herstmonceux with Edwin and Orpha Saunders and their son John William aged 7[5]

In 1881 Samuel, a widower aged 70, was lodging in Wartling, Hailsham with Edwin Saunders, aged 52. In the household are Edwin's wife Orpha, son John W and mother Elizabeth aged 91.[6]

Baptised 3rd or 8th December 1811

Marriage to Elizabeth Pankhurst 23 December 1837 in Hellingly at the age of 26.

1841 Census aged 30 living at Hurstmonceux

1851 Census aged 39, living in Warbleton with 6 Children.

1861 Census not found. Elizabeth died between 1851 and 1861 unsure where.

Samuel married Eliza ( Bones )( Coleman ) in Hellingly 22 November 1862 , Eliza died in the first quater of 1871 so Samuel was a Widower for the second time.

1871 Census aged 59 a Widower and Boarder with Edwin Saunders and Orpah.

1881 Census aged 70 a Widower and still Lodging with Edwin and Orpah also Parents Thomas 83 and Elizabeth aged 80.

1891 Census aged 79 Inmate at Hellingly Union Workhouse ( although states married ).

1891 in the second quater Samuel died. Registered in Hailsham. Vol. 2b Page 72.

Samuel was aged 79 years.
