Biography

Elizabeth Saunders Morse BIRTH 1757 Salem, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, USA DEATH 27 Aug 1792 (aged 34–35) Paradise, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada BURIAL Morse Burial Ground West Paradise, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada MEMORIAL ID 225105785 · [1]

Elizabeth Saunders was born about 1757 in Salem, New Hampshire. She was the daughter of Timothy Saunders 1st and Judith Rowell. Her father and her Uncle Joseph came to Nova Scotia as part of the New England Planter migration that began in 1760, five years after the expulsion of French Acadians. They were the progenitors of the Saunders name in Nova Scotia.

PLACE NOTE: A number of authors and numerous trees at Ancestry and FamilySearch cite the birthplace of Elizabeth, her siblings and their father, Timothy, as Salem, Massachusetts. A careful reading of the "History of Salem, N. H." by Edgar Gilbert provides substantial proof that their birthplace was Salem, New Hampsire. The area was originally part of the township of Haverhill, Massachusetts, but when a boundary dispute between Massachusetts and New Hampshire was settled in 1741, the northern portion of what was once Haverhill ended up within New Hampshire and the new town soon after took the name Salem. Various pages throughout the book have information on Henry Sanders, a founding father of Salem, New Hampshire, and his family, including two of Henry's sons who came to Nova Scotia in the early 1760s, Joseph (Elizabeth's uncle) and Timothy (Elizabeth's father).

In 1774, Elizabeth married Abner Morse Jr, son of New England Planters Abner Morse Sr and Anna Church. At the time, they were each embarking on their journey into marriage for the first time. Abner was 18 years old and Elizabeth was about 17 years of age. During the course of their 18-year marriage, Abner and Elizabeth had 5 children, namely: Ann, Church, Diadama, Hannah and Rachel. All of them attained adulthood, married and had families of their own.

Elizabeth died at 35 years of age on August 27, 1792 and was laid to rest in Morse Burial Ground, West Paradise beside her husband, Capt. Abner Morse Jr. Left to mourn their loss, besides her husband, were her five minor children all under the age of 17 years, the youngest being but 4 years old.
