In 1824 he married Elizabeth Strong (1808-1864), daughter of John and Mary Strong. Both John Saunders and John Strong were Revolutionary War soldiers at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. Jacob and his family, and brother, William and Jesse, who married Elizabeth's sisters, Sarah and Nancy, and their families migrated to Lawrence County in 1835 where they established the community of Saundersville. Jacob, and later his son John, was storekeeper and postmaster. After Elizabeth's death from smallpox in 1864, he married Elisa McCan. The 16 children of his first marriage were: John, Mary, Martha, Rebecca, Lucinda, Stephen, Pricilla, Jacob III, Isaac, Jesse, a Civil War casualty, Susanne, David, Sarah, Jacob J., Missouri, and America. CONT One by one the nation's defenders are receiving the summons from on high, so let us be ready. Let us live up to our high privileges as God's freemen so that when our final summons shall come, it will not be taps, but reveille. Not taps for the darkness and the night of earth but the glorious reveille for the eternal morning; not taps to tell of cares over, sorrows passed, but reveille that gives a welcome to the camp of ever lasting peace where feet never grow weary, cares never come, sorrow never enters. The lights are not out. Earthly glories and triumphs pale before the light that shines about the great white throne. The armies of earth are mustering on the plains beyond the river. There in countless numbers are our comrades of the old days, who fought the fight and kept the faith, and now, the conflict over, wear the crown. We but bivouac here. Let us be so true in our comradeship, so earnest in our service, so loyal in our thoughts and actions to the great commander of all the armies of earth and heaven that amid the closing scenes of our earthly campaign and pilgrimage there shall be sounded for us not taps but reveille. CONT John H. Saunders late a Second Lieutenant of Co. B, 173 Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, departed this life on the 7th day of August 1910, being 85 years, six months and twenty six days old and was laid to rest in the family burying ground on the 8th day of August 1910. He leaves a wife and ten children, four sisters, two brothers and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn their loss. That he was widely known and beloved by all was fully attested by the multitude of people, with tear dimed eyes, in attendance at the funeral services. But most researchers have John H with those dates. John M (Martin) is the son of William and lived in Lawrence County. John H (Harris) is the son of Jacob and lived next door, but in Gallia County. Since I made the original post 2 years ago, I have gained quite a bit of knowledge about these two interesting people. The information you posted is very similar to what I have found in my research. You have included some details I did not previously have and I have some details you did not post. In addition, in a few places, the information I have conflicts with some of your posted information. I would like to ask you the following questions. CONT CONT 1. I have no record of John M. Sanders Jr, born 1844, son of John M. Sanders. He does not show up in any census. Also it is suspecious to me that he is married to Elizabeth Clark, the same name as the wife of John H. Saunders. Can you provide any further details on him? CONT CONT 2. Ella Saunders, daughter of Martin Simeon Saunders, is actually Sarah Ella Saunders, the wife of Gideon Saunders, both of who were buried in the Sanders Cemetary. You have her married to Noah McDaniel, whom I have never heard of. Could this be a second marriage I don't know about? CONT CONT 3. I have no record of Mary Saunders, daughter of John Harris Saunders. Could this Mary be the same as Mary Jane born in 1857? CONT CONT 4. I have John Jackson Saunders b 1855 married to Alice R. Massie not Hester Brown. I have Andrew Jackson Sanders, son of John M. Sanders married to Hester Brown. They called Andrew Jackson Sanders "Holy Jack" and he lived at the bottom of the hill on Saundersville Rd at Turkey Creek. Is it possible that I have this wrong? CONT CONT 5. I have America "Mec" Saunders married to James H Null. Is Lewis Williams a second marriage? CONT CONT 6. I have Ginetta (I have the spelling as Jenetta)as single and never married, born Feb 5 1867. Data: Text: Jacob Saunders CONT Jacob Saunders (1802-1876), son of John Sa(u)nders Jr. and Ann Cothan, grandson of John Sanders Sr. and Elizabeth Hancock, born in Fluvanna County, Virginia, died in Gallia County, Ohio. In 1824 he married Elizabeth Strong (1808-1864), daughter of John and Mary Strong. Both John Saunders and John Strong were Revolutionary War soldiers at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. Jacob and his family, and brother, William and Jesse, who married Elizabeth's sisters, Sarah and Nancy, and their families migrated to Lawrence County in 1835 where they established the community of Saundersville. Jacob, and later his son John, was storekeeper and postmaster. After Elizabeth's death from smallpox in 1864, he married Elisa McCan. The 16 children of his first marriage were: John, Mary, Martha, Rebecca, Lucinda, Stephen, Pricilla, Jacob III, Isaac, Jesse, a Civil War casualty, Susanne, David, Sarah, Jacob J., Missouri, and America. The six children of his second marriage were: Dora, Winnie, James, Virginia, Noah, and Iva.
