Biography

Cross of St George
Izet (Saunders) Hockridge was born in England.

Izet Saunders was born about 1675, most likely in Cornwall or a nearby county of England. [citation needed] Birth year estimated from age at death of 71 in 1746.

Izet Saunders married John Hockridge on 1st June 1709 at Kilkhampton, Cornwall, England.[1]

Izet and John Hockridge apparently had no children.[2]

Izet Hockridge, wife of John (yeoman), died in 1746 and was buried on 20th May 1746 at Saint Morwenna and Saint John the Baptist Churchyard, Morwenstow, Cornwall, England.[3][4][5]

Izet had a headstone which was removed from the church. It stated: "Hockridge Izet, 20 May 1746, age 71, wife of John Hockridge of Ilfcombe".[6]

Research Notes

Spelling of her first name has several variations including Iset, Izet, Isot, and Isott. This name derives from "Isolde", a very baffling and widely debated name from Celtic mythology. Common spelling was the Latinised Isolda, or the local versions, Isot or Isaut. Baptism records for the name between 1500-1700 are mostly confined to Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, and a few other counties in southern England. At this time the name was usually recorded as Isett, Izet, Isitt, Isatt, Izatt, Izott, Isott and Isota. [7]

The Billion Graves website has allocated a birth year of 1675, but no source available for this. It possibly came from the age at death, 71, as stated on the memorial removed from the church.
