According to Census records Dianah was born between 1800 and 1805 in Maryland. [1][2] She was the daughter of Diana (Stone) Saunders She married first a Ewing and lived in Fayette County (then Greenbrier County) near her brother, Isaac Sanner (Their surname is seen variously as Sanders, Sanner and Saunders among the family in Virginia). [3]
After her first husband died, she married Samuel Kincaid. Her marriage bond, recorded in Monroe County, Virginia on July 23, 1828, was signed by Samuel Kincaid and her brother, Isaac [4][5][6]
By 1850 Dianah is listed as a widow living with her son(?) Samuel Kincaid, age 20, in Fayette County. [1]. In 1860 she is sharing a house in Fayette County with two other older women. Her status is listed as "grass widow", meaning a woman who is either divorced or has been left by her husband. [2]
Research Note
There was a Dianah Ewing, widow of 20-29, in the 1830 Census in Greenbrier County, Virginia, with 2 boys under 5, 1 boy 5-9, and 1 girl 10-14 [7] a part of which later formed Fayette County in 1831. Though this woman mostly fits the parameters of the Dianah of this profile, it is hard to reconcile her marriage bond in 1828 and then her appearance as a widow in 1830.
