Robert Collingwood Saunders was born on Sunday, 17th June 1877 the 4th child and 4th son of mason William Saunders and Helen Mary Wilson's 5 children. Robert's birth was registered by his father William Saunders who was present at the birth with the Govan registrar on the 26th June.

Robert's father William Saunders died on Thursday, 21st April 1881 at at the age of 41 from compound fracture. When William, married to Helen Wilson died his usual residence was Haddington and he was a mason. William's death was reported by first cousin William Saunders , of 2 Rosehill Place, on 22nd April at Edinburgh.

Robert's half-sister Mary McIntosh was born on Tuesday, 4th September 1883. Mary's birth was registered by mother Helen Saunders and father John McIntosh. Father John McIntoch was employed as a mason (journeyman).
Helen is described as the widow of William Saunders, mason, who died 21st April 1881 at Edinburgh. John McIntosh's residence is Nungate, Haddington.
When the census was taken on Sunday, 5th April 1891 Robert, attending school, was living with his mother Helen Saunders, aged 43, a laundress. Other family members living in the household were:

Robert's sister Helen Saunders married 23 year old James McQueenie, a bachelor and skinner of Brownhills Close, Nungate on Saturday, 31st December 1898 after banns according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church. James was the son of James McQueenie, labourer, and Susanna McQueenie(nee Reilly). When Helen married she was living at 33 High Street, Haddington and her occupation was domestic servant. The marriage was registered on 3rd January 1898 at Haddington. Witnesses were brother Stephen McQueenie and Mary Shanley.
When the census was taken on Sunday, 31st March 1901, an oil works labourer, was a boarder in the household of John Steven, a reportman in oil works. Other members of John Steven's family living in the household were:
• wife Eleanor Steven, aged 45 • son George Steven, aged 17, an oil works labourer • son William Steven, aged 15, an oil works labourer • son John Steven, aged 12, at school • son Alexander Steven, aged 10, at school • daughter Jessie Steven, aged 8, at school • son Andrew Steven, aged 4
1907 - Robert's Death: 15 Roman Camp, Uphall, Linlithgowshire, Scotland[9]
Robert Collingwood Saunders died on Monday, 21st January 1907 at at the age of 29 from scalds of 2nd and 3rd degrees both legs, bed sores, exhaustion. When Robert, unmarried, died his occupation was oil worker. Robert's death was reported by his sister Mary Saunders , who was present at time of death, on 22nd January at Broxburn.
