Richard was likely born about 1565 based on his marriage in 1592 but his origins are not yet determined. He has been conflated with the armigerous Richard Saunders of Amersham who married Anne Isham and Elizabeth Blount.
A valuable and robust discussion about the Saunders of Amersham and Tobias the emigrant to Taunton, Massachusetts and Rhode Island is here.
Richard was a miller according to his will (see below). He married Johanna Osborne on 7 Oct 1592 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.[1] and[2]
Family
Baptismal dates are listed. It is worth noting that all four of these children were listed as children of "Ric" or "Richard" whereas the known children of heraldic Richard Saunders all had their father listed as "Mr." or "Esquire". All four appear as well in "Amersham in Buckinghamshire, baptisms, 1561-1661"[3] although only the first 3 are shown in this image.
Ann Saunders (or Anna) d Ric 16 Feb 1583/84[4] died in infancy
Bridget Saunders d Ric 14 May 1587[5] m. Thomas Watkins 14 May 1608 Amersham
Eliz Saunders d Ric 28 Jun 1590 possibly died 1596 Amersham
Tobias Saunders s Ric 1 Jun 1596 (1 day after Elizabeth of Richard Saunders and Elizabeth Blount)[6] father of "a" Tobias Saunders who "might" have been the emigrant to Rhode Island but problematic
His nuncupative will of May 1629, transcribed here listed his son Tobias but not his wife or any other children. Anna only lived 4 days and wife Johanna pre-deceased Richard in 1615 (below) so they may have all passed away by that date. The will was proved November 1630 by son Tobias.
Richard's possible burial was 6 May 1629 in Amersham[7] although it seems to say "the Elder" so could possibly be for his father? Since his will was proved November 1630 and he may have been too weak to write his will in May when it was given orally, this seems like a reasonable match for his burial.
A likely burial record for Joanna Saunders in Amersham on 27 Jan 1614/15 supports the idea that she pre-deceased him idea and does not conflict with any known data.[8]
Other Amersham (or Amersham Old Town) parish records found on freereg.org.uk include:
John Saunders who married Maria Clarke 23 Dec 1596 (there were multiple John Saunders of the armigerous line around at the time so caution is needed)
Anne Saunders who married John Nurce 30 Mar 1597
Henry Saunders who married Elizabeth Kempson 6 Dec 1604
Michael Saunders who married Ann Bovendon 7 Aug 1626
Anne "Sanders" who married Ferdinand Field 5 May 1634
Baptismal records for Amersham are apparently only at family history centers and only on-site
