Biography

John Savage, of Union District, South Carolina, was born about 1750 [1] and left a will that was proved 11 August 1812.[2]

His will, dated 3 August 1812, names wife Sarah; sons William, Joshua, and John; and daughters Anne, Sarah, Rebecca, and Margaret. The first six children have similar bequests; Margaret is left $1. He names his wife and James Savage Junior executors; among the witnesses is Robert Savage.[2]

Research Notes

The DAR record for John Savage (#A100610) has the following note:

"Sarah marr 1st to John Jolley A061719 till he died in 1781. See *W9276 thru Jolley. Son John Savage b 1775 can't be son of this man."[1]

That John Savage did have a son named John is evident from his 1812 will.[2] In addition, his son John was living in 1846 when, on 18 May, Abraham McJunkin (who had married John's daughter Margaret) applied for a pension based on the service of Sarah's first husband, John Jolly, who was killed in March 1781, on behalf of the heirs of the late Sarah Savage, who had next married John Savage, also a veteran, in 1783. Surviving children at the time of Sarah's death, on 8 October 1838, included Benjamin Jolly and the following Savage children:[3]

  • "John Savage living in the State of Mississippi"[3]
  • "Sarah Savage now the wife of T. G. Otterson & residing in the State of Alabama"[3]
  • "William Savage now living in Union District South Carolina"[3]
  • "Margaret Savage who at the death of her Mother was the wife of this deponent but who has since died to wit, on the 23rd June in the year 1845"[3]

See his DAR record and the pension application for information about his military service.[1][3]

John was born in 1738, according to Family information. Records supporting this date include military records for John Savage. However, others report he was born in 1750. Therefore, he was born between 1738-1750. Records related to John Savage being mustered in Granville County, in 1756, would only apply to him if he was born in 1738 instead of 1750.

He was the son of William Savage and Rebecca Singleton. He passed away in 1812.

Captain John Savage was involved in the Battle of Cowpens, and has been reported to have been the first to fire. This has been documented in W9276, Application for Revolutionary War Pension that was submitted by Joseph McJunkin. John is listed as a Private in a list of Granville County Detachments under the command of Captain John McPherson. It was drafted November 8, 1759.

John was married to Sarah Palmer.

John lived in Union County, South Carolina in 1790. In his household included 2 males 16 and over; 3 males under 16; and 6 females.

Children of John and Sarah are William, Joshua, Margaret, Anne, Rebecca, John, and Sarah. Of those, two have been DNA confirmed with AncestryDNA. These two are Joshua, born in 1785 and Sarah, born in 1797.

John is buried at McJunkin Cemetery in Union County, South Carolina.

Savage-10446 and Savage-1292 appear to represent the same person because: Although the date of birth is different, these two John Savage's are the same person. My date of birth is listed because of military records listing him being mustered in the South Carolina militia November 8, 1759; and because of family information. One way or another; however, the profile I created is the same person.
