Biography

Alice Savage was probably born in Clifton, Cheshire, England, as her family were known as the Savages of Clifton.[1]

Alice was the daughter of Sir John Savage and his wife, Maud, daughter and heir of Robert Swinerton.[1] Sir John Savage was knighted by King Henry V at the battle of Agincourt in 1415.[1]

Alice was married to Sir Henry Bold.[1] The Visitation of the County Palatine of Lancaster, says the name of Sir Henry Bolde's wife was Grace [Latin: Gratia].[2] Henry's parents, Richard Bolde and Elen Halsale, married in 6 Henry IV[2] which was 30 September 1404-29 September 1405.

Grace and Henry were the parents of:

  1. Richard de Bolde, a knight in 22 Edward IV [4 March 1482-3 March 1483], died 2 Henry VII [22 August 1486-21 August 1487], married 17 Henry VI [1 September 1438-31 August 1439] Catherine, daughter of Richard Bolde of Cheshire;[2]
  2. Gilbert Bolde, had property in Wydenes, 16 Henry VI [1 September 1437-31 August 1438];[2]
  3. Joanna, who was married 19 Edward IV [4 March 1479-3 March 1480], to Robert son and heir of Thomas Reddyche de Grapynell, Cheshire;[2] and
  4. Elizabeth, who was married 29 Henry VI [1 September 1450-31 August 1451] to — Sefton;[2]

Henry was living in 8 Henry V [21 March 1420-20 March 1421] and 4 Edward IV [4 March 1464-3 March 1465].[2]

Grace, the widow of Henry, was living in 19 Edward IV,[2] which was 4 March, 1479, to 3 March, 1480.

Savage-740 and Savage-24 do not represent the same person because: It's already agreed these are different people

Savage-740 and Savage-24 do not represent the same person because: Removing this match so I can get rid of the unmerged match of these two proiles.

Can someone hop on the merge down below? Grace Alice Savage Bolde needs one profile, not two profiles. Preferably the profile should connect to her parents. Right now she does not.

Savage-740 and Savage-24 are not ready to be merged because: Last name for Savage-24 currently has no source, so may not actually be Savage. Needs further research to confirm these are the same person, and not two separate wives of Henry Bold.

Savage-740 and Savage-24 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same parents and are married to the same Sir Henry.

Savage-740 and Savage-24 do not represent the same person because: After spending quite some time investigating, I have found no contemporary evidence that Grace's last name at birth was Savage. I suggest her surname is changed to Unknown. I can also find no evidence (aside from the visitation) that Alice Savage-740 even existed. I suggest her profile is marked Uncertain Existence.

Thanks for proposing this merge. I wonder if Alice and Grace might be two separate wives of Henry Bold? Looking at the sources, the 1580 Cheshire visitation states that Alice Savage married Henry Bold. The 1664-5 Lancashire visitation indicates a wife named Grace, a widow, no surname given. Based on these two sources, they seem like two different people. Is there a source for Grace's surname being Savage?

Nic, You're welcome.

Grace was Sir Henry's widow in 1479-80. There is no indication in the Lancashire Visitation that Sir Henry married twice. Nor have I seen any indication elsewhere that he did.

I haven't found a source which includes Grace's surname, but of course I will keep looking.

In the meantime, if you prefer, it can be return to being an unmerged match?

Thanks Maryann, I too have had a look for Grace's surname and not found anything. I have also looked for evidence that Alice was married twice, which would be the case if Alice/Grace are the same person, since Grace was a widow when she married Henry Bold, according to the 1664-5 visitation. No luck there either.

I'll set them to an unmerged match for the moment, and check a few more potential sources to see if any of them have further details.

Hi Nic

I don't think the 1664-5 Visitation means Grace was a widow when she married Henry Bold, I think it means she was recorded as living as Henry's widow in 1479-80.

Ah, yes, I think you're right about that. That simplifies things a bit.

Does anyone have access to the parish records here? These families were important enough that there should be documentation. Or even marriage contracts or bands? I will try to hunt down the Bolde family parish, but I am sure someone in the pre 1500 circle will have these records already.
