Vittorio Emanuele Maria Alberto Eugenio Ferdinando Tommaso di Savoia (known in English as King Victor Emanuel II), was born on 14 March 1820 at Palazzo Carignano, Torino (Turin), Kingdom of Sardinia. He was king of Sardinia from 1849 until, on 17 March 1861, he assumed the title King of Italy to become the first king of a united Italy since the 6th century, a title he held until his death in 1878. The Italian royal dynasty is styled Di Savoia, and not Di Savoia-Carignano, the cadet branch of the House of Savoia, to which Vittorio Emanuele's immediate direct forefathers belonged. The Italians call Vittorio Emanuele by the epithet Padre della Patria (Father of the Fatherland).

In 1842 Vittorio Emanuele wed his first cousin once removed Adelheid Franziska Marie Rainera Elisabeth Clotilde von Habsburg-Lothringen (Adelaide of Austria, 1822–1855), daughter of Archduke Rainier Joseph von Österreich and his wife Princess Maria Francesca Elisabetta Carlotta Giuseppina di Savoia. Vittorio and Adelheid had the following issue:

Vittorio Emanuele wed morganatically Rosa Vercellana, who bore him two children. Victor Emmanuel had several other mistresses who bore him children as well.
King Vittorio Emanuele II died on 9 January 1878 and was buried in the Pantheon, Roma, Italy. Vittorio Emanuele's successor to the throne of Italy was his son by Queen Adelheid (Adelaide), Umberto I.
