King of Italy.
Son of Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia and Archduchess (later Queen) Adelheid Franziska Marie Rainera Elisabeth Clotilde von Habsburg-Lothringen, Umberto was born in Torino, Piemonte, Regno di Sardegna (English: Turin, Kingdom of Sardinia) on 14 March 1844.
On 21 April 1868 Umberto wed his first cousin, Margherita Teresa Giovanna, Pincipessa di Savoia (Princess of Savoy). She bore him one son: Vittorio Emanuele, principe di Napoli (English: Victor Emanuel, prince of Naples), who later became King of Italy.
On 9 Jan 1878 Umberto I succeeded his father as King of Italy. He reigned until his assassination on 29 July 1900. On 9 August 1900, King Umberto I was buried in the Pantheon in Roma, aside his father Vittorio Emanuele II. Umberto I was succeeded as King of Italy by his son Vittorio Emanuele III.
