Biography

Françoise Savoie, daughter of François Savoie and Catherine Lejeune, was born around 1653.[1] probably in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France. Her parents married in 1651 and had nine children;[2] she was their first.

She married Jean Corporon in Port-Royal around 1670,[1] estimated by the age of their first listed child, a unnamed girl, 6 weeks old at the time of the 1671 Port-Royal Census.

In 1686, at Port Royal, Francoise SAVOYE (sic), aged 35, was living with her husband, Jean CORPORON, aged 39, and their eight children: Marie, aged 16, Magdelaine (sic), aged 14, Jeanne, aged 12, Jean, aged 10, Marie, aged 8, Isabelle (sic), aged 6, Cicille (sic), aged 4, and Marguerite, aged 1. The family had 2 cattle, 2 sheep, and 1 hog. No land was listed.[3]

By 1693 two children were gone with nine remaining at home.[4]

In 1698 they were still living in Port-Royal, and had nine children remaining at home; Charles was not counted.[5]

They were counted there again in 1700 with nine children; Charles and Ambroise were missing.[6]

The family also appeared in the censuses of 1707[7] and 1710.[8]

Françoise Savoie, Madame Corporon, was buried on 27 December 1711 at St Jean Baptiste Parish, in Annapolis Royal (named Port-Royal until 1710), aged about 60 years. The date of death is not mentioned in the register.[9][10]

DNA

  • Maternal relationship is confirmed through Mitochondrial DNA test results on Family Tree DNA. Lawrence Muise, FTDNA kit # 172529, and his maternal line cousin UNK (a direct matrilineal descendant of Monique LeFevre), FTDNA kit N143206, have an Genetic Distance = 1 in HVR2 at A214R, thereby confirming their direct maternal lines back to their most-recent common ancestor who is Catherine Lejeune, the 7x great grandmother of Lawrence Muise and 9th great grandmother of UNK. See this diagram from the Mothers of Acadia DNA Project for more information.
