Biography

Edmund Sawyer was of Ipswich, Massachusetts by 1635 when he is found in a number land grants. Outside of these land records very little is known of him.
It is likely that he is not a Sawyer at all as he is found most commonly as Edmund Sayward. Anderson confirms that the man commonly called Edmund Sawyer of Ipswich is the same person Edmund Sayward.
He is sometimes said to be the the same as Edward Sawyer who settled in Rowley, Massachusetts. This is incorrect. They are not the same person. Edmund and Edward are distinct names; Edmund had a son Samuel who removed to York which does not fit with him being Edward of Rowley.
- Edmund Sayward - 1635, land abutting John Coggswell
- Edmund Sawyer - 1637, land abutting Thomas Clarke
- Edmund Seward - 1638, granted 38 acres
- Edmund Seward - 1639, land abutting Thomas Clarke
It is likely that he moved to York as his son Samuel is found there
"Samuel Sawyer of York, son of Edmund Sawyer, sometime inhabitant of Ipswich, have given and granted by these presents do give grant and aliene unto Jospeh Metcalf of Ipswich in New England, seaman, a parcel of land in Ipswich..." dated 9 April 1661.
- Samuel Sayward confirmed his grant on 25 November 1687
on 5 April 1675 John Knowlton of Ipswich wrote to his loving friend Sam' Sayward of York
It is very possible that Edmund Sayward of Ipswich was a brother of Henry Sayward also of Ipswich.
