John was born on St Helena island about 1813 (October 1812 if he died 20/2/1874) Probably arrived in South Africa about 1820.
John Edward Sawyer married Maria Catharina Morgenrood on 18/11/1833 at St. Paul's Rondebosch, Cape Town, Cape Colony. [1] Record added 1/2/2022 by Gladwin-7.
In the latter half of the 1840’s he had his own business as a butcher in Mowbray. He rented property (a residence and a shop) on a block bordered on Victoria Road to the North, Church Street to the East and Hare Street to the West, owned by his brother-in-law Philip Dominicus Morgenrood. Close to an Inn known as the Three Cups.
On the 26 June 1850 he was sequestrated by the Cape Supreme Court. According to the papers most of the shop fittings belonged to his brother-in-law while his wife’s stepfather owned some of the household furnishings.
It would seem that John and Maria continued living in Philip’s house and both started teaching at the school belonging to St Peter’s Anglican Church, Mowbray.
In a memorial dated 1874 Edward is described as the “exemplary schoolmaster and Church Clerk of St Peter’s in this Parish” [2]
John died in Mowbray on the 20th of February 1874.
Buried 22nd February 1874, St Paul's church, Rondebosch. [3]
