Birth and Baptism

Marriage
Sarah married Richard Stamp by banns at All Saints church, Winterton, Lincolnshire, on 19 July 1763. Sarah was described as a Spinster of this Parish. Witnesses were John Hall and Thomas Hall.[1][2]

Children
Sarah and Richard had children including:

  1. John, born in 1766 and baptized at St Andrew's church, Burton upon Stather, on 7 April 1766.[3][4] John died three months later and was buried at Burton upon Stather on 24 July 1766.[5][6]
  2. Sarah, born in 1769 and baptized at St Andrew's church, Burton upon Stather, on 5 April 1769.[7][8]
  3. Ann, born about 1772 and baptized at St Andrew's church, Burton upon Stather, on 6 January 1773.[9][10]
  4. John, born at Thealby in 1776 and baptized at St Andrew's church, Burton upon Stather on 9 May 1776.[11][12]
  5. Isaac, born at Thealby in 1779 and baptized at St Andrew's church, Burton upon Stather, on 23 March 1779.[13][14]
  6. Richard, born about 1781 and baptized at St Andrew's church, Burton upon Stather, on 14 January 1782.[15][16]

Sarah's husband Richard died in November 1797 and was buried at Burton upon Stather on 22 November 1797.[17][18]

Death and Burial
Sarah died at Thealby in 1822 and was buried at Burton upon Stather on 10 August 1822.[19][20]

Research Notes

Birth and Baptism
It is commonly accepted that Sarah was born about 1735, her baptism taking place at Wrawby on 19th of February 1734/5, recording Sarah as the natural child of Elizabeth Sawer.[21] However, since Sarah's list child Richard was born about 1781, this would make Sarah about 46 when Richard was born. This is unusually old. However, Sarah's burial record gives her age at death as 85, giving a calculated birth year of 1737, which is in reasonable agreement.

There are three other possible candidates for Sarah's birth and parentage. These are:

  1. Sarah Sawyer, daughter of Robert Sawyer and his wife Mary, born in 1737 and baptized at Winteringham, Lincolnshire, on 25 February 1736/7.[22][23] However, there is a marriage of Sarah Sawyer to Joseph Crust at Winteringham on 24 June 1762. One of the witnesses were Robert Sawyer. The couple were married by licence, citing Sarah's age as 24.[24][25] Sarah Crust, wife of Joseph Crust died on 9 May 1803 of a Fever and was buried at Winteringham on 12 May 1803. She was aged 67.[26][27] Thus this Sarah from Winteringham can be ruled out as a candidate for the Sarah of this profile.
  2. Sarah Sawyer, daughter of William Sawyer and his wife Jane, born at Appleby about 1742 and baptized at Appleby on 21 January 1742/3.[28][29] However, there is a marriage of Sarah Sawyer to William Abbey at Appleby on 10 July 1773. The couple were married by licence, which gave Sarah's age as 30.[30][31] Although no burial record has been found, this Sarah of Appleby is also ruled out as being the Sarah of this profile.
  3. Sarah, daughter of Edward Sawyer and his wife Sarah, born at Barton upon Humber, Lincolnshire, in 1743 and baptized at Barton upon Humber on 27 March 1743.[32][33] However, this Sarah died in infancy and was buried at Barton upon Humber on 15 April 1743.[34][35] Hence this Sarah can also be ruled out as a candidate.

Finally, a search was made for other marriages or burials for a Sarah Sawyer born at Wrawby. None were found.

In conclusion, pending further information, the Sarah born at Wrawby is accepted as the Sarah of this profile, despite Sarah's age when her last child was born.

Other possible children
There are some other children of a Richard and Sarah Stamp baptized at Goxhill. Perhaps there were two Richard and Sarah Stamps?
