Biography

Frederick was born in 1748. He was the son of James Sexton and Abilene Gilbert.

FREDERICK SAXTON was one of the first settlers in the town of Burlington. Located at the head of Pearl street in 1785, resided there several years. Sold to Col. Pearl, in 1792, and removed to Shelburne, located on a point a distance north of Comstock's Point, now owned and occupied by Geo. Saxton, a descendant of Frederick; resided on this point till his death in 1796, the manner of which may be learned under head of "drowning," in this paper.

Frederick was an American Revolution patriot and a DAR Ancestor # A100382 from Massachusetts. He served under Captains Holm and Spoor; and Colonels John Fellows and Ashley. (See MA Soldiers and Sailors: Vol 13, p 889) in the 8th Berkshire Regt.

April 28th, 1796, Col. Frederick Saxton, Jared Post and two of his sons—all citizens of this town—started in a log canoe to cross Lake Champlain from Saxton's Bay to Willsborough Point directly opposite. When about a mile or so from the Point the wind, which had been increasing from the time they first set out, had become so strong that the canoe filled with water, and the whole party were drowned. Their bodies were never found.

There is a fine Saxton family Lineage published in the Nebraska and Midwest Genealogical Record (NMGR), an online journal. See Vol X No. 2 pgs 30-31; April 1932. This establishes Rhoda Saxton Blinn as his daughter with Rhoda Messenger. She was born October 31, 1787.

Gravesite Details Frederick Saxton drowned in Lake Champlain in 1796, and his body was never found. April 28th, 1796,he started in a log canoe to cross Lake Champlain from Saxton's Bay to Willsboro. The canoe filled with water due to high winds.
