Another source showed this to be 20 inall. Robert and Peggy Ann amassed a good fortune and the children spent it,Peggy Ann on the side of the children. Often when they went to town shewould ask him for money and he'd give her a $5 or $10 bill, and it wouldmake her mad at such a meager sum, and he'd give her his pocket book orwallet. She was of German descent and he Irish. They used to butcher 12 to 14 head of hogs at one time. When she cookedit had to be a big platter full, and she would swear when they didn't eatit all, and throw it out to the dog and swear at him if he couldn't eatall of it. But at that she was a chuch goer and he had had no tim e forpreachers. Once a preacher stopped at Fleming's with a sick horse andasked Robert what do for it. He said to get on him and ride him down theroad like Hell. The women folks wore silk dresses which none but moneyed people couldwear in those days. Reobert gave a plot for a cemetery on his land thathe had cleared off. It is known as the Fleming graveyard. Now it isgrown up to weeks and there is but little space left for new graves. There were several families came to Indiana with the Flemings, among themwere Robinsons and Cobbs. Among the Robinsons was one Abigale Robinson, (Sime's grandmother) ateacher, who taught school near Valparaiso, Ind. She married DuncanGarvey. They had the following children: (This was unclear) Ann, Clara,James, richard, Salyards, Morgan, Copeland (Dick) Wilson, Will(unmarried) and buried at Leith, N.D.), Hattie, Ben. It is said Duncanwas so mean his wife left him. He used to, for one thing, go outside atnight and try to make her think he was leaving and throw log chaines,etc. into the wagon and run it down hill. Union Township Porter County - Recorded March 11, 1844 Robert bought land from Ben McCarty. He got a warranty deed, January 7,1843-for-N.E.1/4-and S.E. County-T35-R6W-Union Township Porter County. Porter Cross Roads News 1877: "A ban of Gypsies encamped near Robert Fleming's for two months and havegone to near the Freed School." West Center News 1877: "Jacob Bryfogle rented a farm from Robert Fleming." 1878: Robert Fleming bought a new wagon for $125.00. He now has thebest wagon in the county. Robert like his father through his thriftiness and land became a wealthyman. Robert died at the age of 74 on March 6, 1888 and was buried onMarch 7, 188. His wife Margaret died at the age of 70 on May 14, 1890.She was buried on May 15, 1890. Both are buried in the Fleming Cemetaryin Porter County Indiana. Their names are on the same tomb stone whichis the nicest in the cemetary and one of the nicest in the county.Robert and Margaret out-lived 15 of their 19 children.Less
