Biography

Joseph was born 28 July 1765 in Guilford County, North Carolina,[1] to Henry Gibson Scales and Mary Crunk. On 7 Apr 1785 probably in Rockingham County, North Carolina, he married Martha "Patsy" Allen, daughter of Valentine Allen and Nancy Ann Arnold, and they had at least nine children. They are listed on the 1790 Census in Rockingham County, North Carolina, with 3 females, some probably small.[2] In 1800 they are in the town of Salisbury, still in Rockingham County, with 7 children: 2 males under ten, 2 females under ten, 2 females 10-15, and 1 female 16-25.[3] Sometime before 1820, they move to Davidson County, Tennessee, because he registers a land warrant #1953 in Oct 1820 there.[4] He registers another land warrant #17986 in Shelby County, Tennessee, for 22 acres on 10 Sept 1822.[5] He also acquires land in Lawrence County, Alabama, where in 1821 an election precinct was established at his place.[6] His will is dated 18 Jan 1830 and recorded 2 Dec 1832,[7] and it appears in Davidson Co. and Shelby Co., TN, and Franklin Co., AL. It is very long with many directives and was contested; it appears in Orphan's court in Franklin Co. and Shelby Co. still in 1843.[8] He actually died 3 Feb 1830 in Shelby County, TN, and is buried in Scales Cemetery in Rockingham, NC.[9] where his parents are buried.
