Biography

Max Edwin Scalf Jr. of Rising Sun, Indiana passed away peacefully at Dearborn County Hospital with family on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the age of 66. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 24, 1946 to the late Katherine Marie Calvert Guard and Max Edwin Scalf Sr. He graduated from Rising Sun High School in 1964. After graduation, he attended the Sam’s Technical School in Indianapolis, Indiana for couple months. He joined the United States Air Force in September of 1964. He was united in marriage, with his high school sweetheart, on May 29, 1965 to Marilyn Sue Vinup at the Rising Sun Church of Christ. After their wedding, they returned to Wichita Falls, Texas where he was stationed. The following March, he received his duty orders to go to Ipswich, England. While there, their first born child Nicholas Edwin Scalf was born on February 2, 1968. Upon completion of his military duty in the fall of 1968, he returned to Rising Sun, Indiana with his wife and son of 7 months old. In September of 1968, Ed was employed with Seagram’s Distillery in a temporary position which turned into a full time career. On October 22, 1971 his second child, Michele Dawn Scalf was born. The family moved to Lawrenceburg in May, 1979. Ed was very active in his children’s sporting activities. He started teaching the basic basketball fundamentals to the 5th & 6th grade classes to assist in the development of the Lawrenceburg sports program. He was very involved coaching and assisting in the Lawrenceburg Babe Ruth Program while his son Nick played. He continued to be actively involved in coaching & assisting with a summer softball team / league when his daughter Michele started playing in the 6th grade. He never missed a game in whatever sport his children played if he could help it. This continued even through their college years. Throughout his life Ed was very active in Church and Community Organizations. He was a past member of the Rising Sun Lions Club, a Youth Fellowship Leader at the Rising Sun United Methodist Church, and past Commander of the Noah O’Banion Post #59 Legion as well as 40 & 8. Ed was currently a member of the Rising Sun Church of Christ. Ed retired in April of 2004 from Seagrams serving 38 years in various supervisor positions. After retirement, he continued to go watch his grandchildren in their various sporting events and activities as often as he could. Ed enjoyed boating, golfing, watching all type of sporting events as well as spending couple winter months with family & friends in Florida. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Marilyn Sue Vinup Scalf; two children Nicholas Edwin Scalf and Michele Dawn Scalf (Gregg) Weissman; four grandchildren Shelby & Logan Scalf and Garrett & Hanna Weissman; Step-Father Leroy Guard; Half-Sister Kathy Guard Dawson and her husband Don, and Half-Brother Mark A. Guard; Half-Brother Rick Scalf and wife Kathy, and Half-Sister Shari Scalf: Mother-In-Law Betty Rose Vinup; Sister-In-Law Cheri Collins and husband Barry, Brother-In-Laws Jerry Vinup and Steve Vinup & families. Great Aunt Dorothy Foster. Granny Dorothy Brady. Also survived by many nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and host of close friends. He will be truly missed.

Visitation will be Monday May 28 2012 at Markland Funeral Home from 5-8 PM.

Funeral Service will be Tuesday at 11 am at the Rising Sun Church of Christ.
