AUTO ACCIDENTS TAKE TWO LIVES
PROCTOR MAN KILLED IN MISHAP HERE
Automobiles carried two men to their deaths in Duluth and the Northwest yesterday. A Proctorite was fatally injured in a collision in Duluth, and a resident of Winton drowned when his car plunged through the ice on a lake near Ely.
Three persons were injured.
Dead were:
EDWARD SCANLON, 21, of 41 East First Street, Proctor.
Injured were:
Duane Nichols, 21 of 8721 Vinland Street, who suffered bruises and abrasions in the accident in which Scanlon was killed.
Walter Scharnotte, 21 of 2314 West Sixth Street, who suffered minor injuries.
John Votruva, 21, of 2022 West Sixth Street, who received bruises and lacerations on his legs in the Scanlon tragedy.
The accident occurred as Scanlon, with his companions, was returning from Cloquet to Duluth. Police said, Scanlon, driver of the car, apparantly lost control of the vehicle and went off the road.
HITS SHOULDER
The automobile hit the shoulder of Highway 61, two-thirds of a mile from Sixty-Fifth avenue west, and turned over several times.
It was the city's 17th fatal traffic accident of the year.
Scanlon and Nichols were taken to the Webber hospital by the Duluth Ambulance service, while Scharnotte and Votruva were taken to the same institution by Vincent O. Erickson, route 5, box 88, West Duluth, a motorist who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident.
Scharnotte was released from the hospital, while Nichols and Votruva were still confined last night. Their condition was described as "good."
Surviving Scanlon are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Scanlon, Proctor, and four sisters, Sister M. Ann Edward, Mrs. Dell Leonard, Miss Margaret Scanlon and Miss Clarice Scanlon, all of Duluth.[3][4][5]
