Lafayette Scarborough served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 10 Oct 1861 Side: CSA Regiment(s): 9th Texas Infantry
Lafayette was born in 1837 to Lawrence Scarborough and his 3rd wife, Sarah Conn in Arkansas. By the time he was 2, his father had moved the family to Louisiana. His father died there when Lafayette was 8, and his mother when he was 18. He moved to Texas by the 1860 US Census, where he signed up with the Confederacy in 1862. After the war, he married Martha E Pullen in 1865 at age 27, continuing to live in Texas until his death in 1899, when he was 61 years old.
The "Petition for Administratrix" below is his mother asking the court to allow her to administer his father's estate among his myriad of children.
To the Honorable the Judge of the Twelfth Judicial District Court holding Session in and for the parish of Union State of Louisiana.
The petition of Sarah Scarborough a resident of the said Parish and State, with respect represents unto your Honor that Lawrence Scarborough late of said Parish departed this life intestate on or about the day of October 1846. And leaving an Estate consisting of lands and personal property rights & credits, in your said Parish, and the following heirs towit:
Polly wife of Thomas Lacey, residing in said state
Allice wife of Aaron Cox resident of the State of Arkansas
Issue of his marriage with Elizabeth Givens. All of whom is of lawful age,
and also the following minor children the issue of his last marriage with Sarah Cann, (your petitioner) towit:
Your petitioner avers that she is the wife of the said Lawrence Scarborough & legally entitle to the Administration of his Estate and has a legal interest in said Estate an account of the community existing between her & her said husband, which community commence by opperation of Law at the time of their marriage in 1824 to the death of her said husband, besides other property brought into the community since their said marriage.
Wherefore she prays your Honor to cause an inventory and appraisement of the property of the said Estate to be made and that an attorney to the absent heirs be appointed to represent them.
That your Honor appoint your petitioner Administratrix of the Estate said decedent and that she be appointed and confirmed as Natural Tutrix to her said minor children and for other and further orders and decree as the nature of the case may require and for general relief as in duty bound etc.
