Biography

Alice was born in 1790 to Lawrence Scarborough and Agnes Stringer (his first of three wives). Alice was the second of over twenty children. She married Aaron Cox, though the date is not known, nor is her death date.

PETITION FOR ADMINISTRATRIX:

Filed November 10, 1846[1]
To the Honorable the Judge of the Twelfth Judicial District Court holding Session in and for the parish of Union State of Louisiana.
The petition of Sarah Scarborough a resident of the said Parish and State, with respect represents unto your Honor that Lawrence Scarborough late of said Parish departed this life intestate on or about the day of October 1846. And leaving an Estate consisting of lands and personal property rights & credits, in your said Parish, and the following heirs towit:
Polly wife of Thomas Lacey, residing in said state
Allice wife of Aaron Cox resident of the State of Arkansas
Allen Scarborough resident of Arkansas
Nancy wife of John Wetherlee, resident of the State of Mississippi,
Acey resident of the state of Arkansas,
Zilly wife of Bryant Gardner residence unknown,
Celas Scarborough resident of the State of Louisiana,
Lawrence Scarborough, residence unknown,
John Scarborough resident of the State of Arkansas.

The children and issue of his marriage with Agness Stringer, all of age.

Martha wife of John Driskel, resident of the State of Arkansas,
Jackson M of Louisiana,
Liddy resident of the State of Arkansas

Issue of his marriage with Elizabeth Givens. All of whom is of lawful age,

and also the following minor children the issue of his last marriage with Sarah Cann, (your petitioner) towit:
Philip D. 17 years old
Becky M. 14,
Margrett A. 10
Lafay H, 8
Sarah B, 6,
William T, 2
Isaac P, infant.
Your petitioner avers that she is the wife of the said Lawrence Scarborough & legally entitle to the Administration of his Estate and has a legal interest in said Estate an account of the community existing between her & her said husband, which community commence by opperation of Law at the time of their marriage in 1824 to the death of her said husband, besides other property brought into the community since their said marriage.
Wherefore she prays your Honor to cause an inventory and appraisement of the property of the said Estate to be made and that an attorney to the absent heirs be appointed to represent them.
That your Honor appoint your petitioner Administratrix of the Estate said decedent and that she be appointed and confirmed as Natural Tutrix to her said minor children and for other and further orders and decree as the nature of the case may require and for general relief as in duty bound etc.
