Scarritt, lifetime resident of St. Louis and well-known furniture merchant ... born St. Louis 1841, father was Russell Scarritt who established firm of Scarritt and Mason. Sanford originally intended to practice law and studied in the office of George F. Strong, but entered on a mercantile career, opening a small furniture store on Market st, later removing to the Mitchell Bldg. on 4th st absorbing the business of Curtis and Mason, successors to the original house of Scarritt and Mason. The business was further enlarged by taking over the Burrell-Comstock Co and the corporate name Scarritt - Comstock Co. was adopted, the business still being continued under the name in the store at the southeast corner of Broadway and Locust. Mr. Scarritt has given slight attention to business matters since 1905 having sold controlling interest to his brother Chas. H. He is survived by two brothers, Chas. H. and the Rev. W.R. Scarritt of Bridgewater, Mass. With him when he died in Wisconsin was his wife and two sons-in-law, E.A. Manny and Chas. deBremond. He was for many years a member of the Board of Trustees of the first Presbyterian Church. He lived at 4252 Washington Blvd, St. Louis."
