Biography

OBITUARY (Fairview Republican, Fairview Oklahoma, February 12, 1926)

William Joseph Scates, son of Elisha and Sarah Scates, was born in Ellsworth County, Kansas, September 30th, 1866 and died in Fairview, Oklahoma February 9th, 1926, aged 59 years, 4 months and 9 days. When a young man he came to Oklahoma with his parents, settling west of Fairview and was married on January 1, 1904, to Margaret Ellen Sternberg. To this union were born four children, Irma Margaret, Merle Ione, Nona Ellen and Erskine Edward, all of whom survive him, the mother having preceded him in death, July 2nd, 1910. In 1911 he united with the Christian Church and was a faithful member until death, working loyally in it as long as physically able. He leaves to mourn, his children, three sisters, one brother, and numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held from the Church of Christ, February 11, by the pastor and the body was laid to rest by the side of his companion in the Fairview cemetery.

Notes: 1) Their wedding date was 1 Jan 1903 (not 1904). 2) Elisha and Sarah were members of the Christian Church in Ellsworth, so we can assume that Will grew up going to church. It is interesting to note that he “united” with the Christian Church in Fairview after Margaret's death and that her funeral was held at the Christian Church with the Methodist Episcopal minister assisting. Margaret's father, Rev. Edward E. Sternberg was a minister as well as her grandfather, Rev. Levi Sternberg.
