Henry Scavella is part of a Bahamian family.

Henry Scavella was born about 1825 - likely in Crooked Island, Bahamas. He had a brother, John William Scavella, and a sister, Catherine, who were both born after he was. They appeared together as minors in the Bahamas Slave Registration of 1831: "Return of Nine Slaves, the property of Henry Scavella, John William Scavella, and Catherine Scavella of Crooked Island, Minors, the first day of January 1831."

He married Margaret Farquharson sometime before 1859. They had children, although not all survived their infancy: Helena Augusta Julia Scavella, Orelia Louisella Scavella, Curtis Castell Scavella, Ida Marie Scavella, Gerard Francis Scavella, and two unnamed children.

On his death record, his race is "M" (mixed) and his rank is Gentleman.

His will is dated Apr 30, 1880 and proved Dec 19, 1884.
