13 Nov 1730: Baptism of Johann Nickolaus Schäffer, son of Peter Schäffer and Elisabeth (Feg) Schäffer at Zion's & St. John's Reed's Lutheran Church, Stouchsburg. Sponsor Johann Nickolaus Feg, Anna Catharina Rith, and Margretha Cass.[1]
Marriage
Dec 17 1753: Nicholas Schaeffer married Maria Susanna Haag (1734- ~1795) at the Northkill Church, Tulpehocken Twp, Berks Co, PA. The couple may have had the following children, but in his 1797 estate papers, only two sons are named, that is Nicholas and Simon. Note: the administrators of this will are Adam Wilhelm and Valentine Gebhardt. The other children in the list originate from internet trees.
Maria Catharina (1777-1863) m 24 Mar 1799 in Berks, Pennsylvania Peter Gebhardt (1771-1804); 2 children. Died in Miamisburg, Montgomery, Ohio. NOTE: the FindAGrave memorial for Peter Gebhardt says he married Catharine Elizabeth Koch? No source or grave for his wife found--perhaps Maria Catharina remarried to Koch after the death of Peter Gebhardt? See Research Notes
Anna Maria (~1780- )
Death
Johann Nicholaus Schaeffer died about Sep 1797. [2]
Notes
Information on Nicholas is primarily from History of the Grim Family of Pennsylvania and its Associated Families compiled and edited by William Gabrel Long. The following are some excerpts from Long's book, including his citations:

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nicholas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nicholas:
I use https://www.hathitrust.org/ a lot you can look up histories of a area and search the books by name I have found a lot of information when doing research and it helps flesh out bios. its free and just takes a bit to get the hang of using but well worth the effort.
The combination of the mis-filed records for two Nicholas Schaefers in Berks County, along with the amplification of this mistake via the DNA eXplained blog post have created a conflation that is difficult to untangle. Now there are FindAGrave entries built from the blog post that further amplify the conflation. The Gebhardt connections pertain to the Nicholas Schaeffer of Tulpehocken--not the Nicholas Shaffer of Maidencreek. I am trying to untangle these two guys but it is difficult; please help if you can.
Thanks Jacqueline for a source that directly addresses the confusion! I wonder what is the primary sourced evidence that he relocated to Maidencreek Township in 1770 and married DeTurk? It does at least partially clarify the confusion about who was "Captain". Susanna DeTurk did have a brother, Daniel, who was a Captain, but according to the source you found, the Captain Nicholas Schaeffer, who was in Newtown in 1776 was the other Nicholas. There is quite a bit more military sourcing in Morton L Montgomery's "History of Berks County in the Revolution" (1894), which I am working through now.
Thanks, yes that's a pretty good source for the Maidencreek Nicholas Shaffer. I don't see any evidence that this Nicholas--or any of his family--went to Montgomery County, Ohio. By contrast, the Tulpehocken Nicholas Schaeffer was living among a large group of people in western Berks County who migrated to Ohio (including many Gebhardts). I guess it remains formerly possible that a woman born in Maidencreek (east of the Schuylkill) went west and married Nicholas Schaeffer in western Berks--but the existence of a different Nicholas right in her vicinity makes this an unlikely possibility.
